As a soon-to-be retired professor of U.S.-Latin American relations, immigration and its causes, is an undeniable central issue of the past forty years. I studied history in college as the civil wars in Central America and the Dirty Wars in South America were underway. Those wars, and the U.S. complicity in those wars framed my historical lens.

Since 2023, I’ve worked with a local Presbyterian church in taking people to the Arizona/Mexico border through Frontera de Cristo, a Presbyterian-based ministry located in Douglas, AZ. This year, we didn’t have a firm delegation committed, so I decided to do the Migrant Trail as a fundraiser to raise money and awareness for/ about Frontera, and a local, South Carolina nonprofit, the Carolina Immigrant Alliance, which helps immigrants with necessary documents and paperwork. I made the decision to do this trek in late March and had only scant awareness about what the whole journey would entail. I consider myself a feet-first type of person, though, and decided to jump in and then quickly learn about what I was doing.

I signed up for the 23 rd annual Migrant Trail, from Sasabe to Tucson, Arizona, the week of May 25-31. I knew nobody, and although I read the participant packet (mostly), I didn’t know exactly what to expect. The group of approximately 40 walkers convened at Shalom Mennonite Church in Tucson on Sunday, May 24, for a four-hour orientation/training session. During the training session, each of us committed to serving on a team, which had daily work assignments. I joined the Food Team, which set up and broke down each meal, daily snacks, and set up washing stations after lunch and dinner each day. We learned at our training that over 8,000 migrants had perished in the landscape where we would walk, and 109 had died since the previous May.

My biggest fear, before starting, was that I didn’t have all the things I needed for the seven-day trek. That proved right, and partly because I misunderstood that we needed to pack EVERYTHING in one bag—we didn’t—our gear, including tents, folding chairs, and sleeping bags could have been packed separately. For that reason, I ditched my sleeping bag because it took up 1/3 of my duffle bag. That was a mistake as the first two nights were very cold. Rolande, a colorful, dedicated Tucson activist, who accompanied the group with her own vehicle, lent me a blanket on day 3, which made subsequent nights better.

We began our journey with a ceremony and press conference at Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson. This was the most beautiful church I’ve ever seen outside historic cathedrals in Europe and Latin America. Pure, simplistic beauty. At this service, each of us took a cross with the name of someone who had died crossing the desert. My cross said “desconocido,” (unknown male) 2006-2007, representing an unidentified male who had died during that year. Most of our crosses bore the same name because few bodies are ever clearly identified.

We rode in cars from Tucson to Sasabe on Monday morning, which is approximately a 2.5-hour drive (I was captivated by the conversations in the vehicle because everyone was interesting and everyone had a story.) After a moving Native American prayer ceremony, we began our trek in Sasabe, along with people who were hiking with us for the first day only. By the end of the day, it became clearer who was in our group for the week.

I wanted to participate in this journey to deepen my commitment to working on immigration issues/policies in the United States, which most of us understand are deeply problematic. I wanted to learn more about the desert and the terrain that many undocumented are forced to negotiate, and I wanted to deal with some of my own grief that had compounded over several decades.

We walked between ten and sixteen miles every day except for the first day, which was barely over seven. We began most days by 6 a.m. but began walking one day at 3:30 a.m. to protect ourselves during the hottest part of the day. I’m very near-sighted and exactly “half blind,” which adds an important dimension to waking up in the middle of the night and packing everything quickly. Our journey was mostly a solemn one, but not entirely. Every other “leg” of the trek we walked in silence. This silence grounded us and I grew to look forward to it.

Every other stop we would iterate the “Presente” litany, calling out the names of the (dead) people on our crosses and all responding to each name, in unison, “Presente!” – meaning we/they are here with us. We walked single-file on paved roads and highways and two-by-two when off-road. I ended up walking near some of the same people. Ellen is a retired schoolteacher from Chicago, who now lives in Flagstaff, and was usually close by. She pointed out all the “foreign” plants along the way. I had never seen a mesquite plant before but learned to step carefully around them. The Saguaro cacti were majestic. We sometimes had to be reigned in for walking too fast. We were constantly reminded to drink water as it is easy to dehydrate in the desert.

I started out sleep-deprived and squarely rooted on Eastern Standard Time. I didn’t sleep at all the first night, so went into day two exhausted. I eventually slept more and felt better as the week wore on. At all times we were accompanied by at least four vehicles carrying food, water, our gear, and port-potties, all the things that migrants themselves do not have access to. We were all aware of the fact that while others do this alone unaided, we had ample support.

Committed groups accompanied us on this journey—churches and various humanitarian organizations. Humane Borders of Tucson brought us a lot of water and sometimes allowed us to spray ourselves with hoses- something I greatly looked forward to. Frontera de Cristo, from Douglas/ Agua Prieta, came and brought us dinner on our first night. A couple of Tucson organizations brought us several meals. On Thursday night we had a real shower and flush toilets, as we stayed in a campground.

We were all appreciative of the luxury of a real shower. Buddhist monks from Tucson prepared us a delicious Thai meal on Friday, which we ate in a Baptist church that allowed us to stay inside the sanctuary for the night. Friday happened to be my 62 nd birthday. This was the first birthday that I’ve ever spent with people that I didn’t know, but I felt embraced and appreciated by a wonderful group of kindred souls—a diverse group of different people who all shared many of the same values about humanity. We were, in the words of Harvard philosopher and theologian, Josiah Royce, “A Beloved Community.” That night, in the church we had a talent show. Several people sang, we all learned a line dance, and several recited words from sage poets and writers.

As we approached Tucson on our last day, many cars beeped at us as we walked along the highway. As far as I could tell, nobody heckled us or jeered us. Border Patrol cars passed by many times during the walk but left us alone. If the Border Patrol had given us a hard time, I was certain that Rolande would have “politely” scolded them and sent them on their way. We finished our walk at Kennedy Park in Tucson, where kindred organizations met us with food and a warm reception. An Episcopal priest washed the feet of twelve of our participants. He kissed the ground before each washing and then kissed the feet of each individual. It was moving-- I was tired; I cried tears of happiness, sadness, and relief.

While the Migrant Trail isn’t for everyone, it is a moving experience for those of us concerned about our brothers and sisters who feel compelled to leave their homes because of violence, genocide, war, and climate change. It’s a good way to deepen our commitment and understanding of how U.S. policies perpetuate the conditions that compel people to migrate. It’s a great experience for those of us who often feel alone with our personal convictions about how to confront the hegemonic powers that wield injustice. It’s something we can DO in solidarity with others.

Mohyeddin, a soon-to-be 79-year-old Palestinian and a mainstay on the Migrant Trail, kept us focused on the intersectional issues that compelled our walk. Each time we would recite the Presente litany, he professed loudly: “Desconocido! Desconocida! Desconocido/a! … Victims of War, Genocide, and Violence Everywhere!” Another world is indeed possible. Como profesora próxima a jubilarme de relaciones entre Estados Unidos y América Latina, la inmigración y sus causas han sido, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los temas centrales de los últimos cuarenta años. Estudié Historia en la universidad mientras se desarrollaban las guerras civiles en Centroamérica y las Guerras Sucias en Sudamérica. Fue un error, ya que las dos primeras noches fueron muy frías. Quería comprender mejor el desierto y el terreno que tantas personas migrantes indocumentadas se ven obligadas a recorrer. También necesitaba enfrentar parte del dolor que había ido acumulando a lo largo de varias décadas.

Caminamos entre diez y dieciséis millas cada día, excepto el primero, cuando recorrimos poco más de siete. La mayoría de las jornadas comenzaban a las seis de la mañana, aunque un día iniciamos a las tres y media para evitar las horas de mayor calor. Soy muy miope y prácticamente tengo visión en un solo ojo, lo que añade un desafío importante a despertarse en plena madrugada y recoger rápidamente todas las pertenencias. Nuestro recorrido fue, en su mayor parte, solemne, aunque también hubo momentos de alegría. Caminábamos en silencio un tramo sí y otro no. Ese silencio nos ayudaba a centrarnos, y con el paso de los días llegué a esperarlo con entusiasmo.

En cada parada alterna recitábamos la letanía del “¡Presente!”. Se pronunciaba el nombre de la persona fallecida representada por cada cruz y todos respondíamos al unísono: “¡Presente!”, recordando que esas personas seguían acompañándonos. Caminábamos en fila india sobre carreteras pavimentadas y de dos en dos cuando avanzábamos fuera del camino. Con frecuencia caminaba cerca de las mismas personas. Ellen, una maestra jubilada de Chicago que ahora vive en Flagstaff, solía estar cerca de mí y me iba señalando las plantas “forasteras” del desierto. Nunca antes había visto un mezquite y aprendí rápidamente a caminar con cuidado alrededor de ellos. Los cactus saguaro eran majestuosos. En ocasiones incluso tenían que pedirnos que redujéramos el paso. Nos recordaban constantemente que bebiéramos agua, ya que es muy fácil deshidratarse en el desierto.

Comencé la caminata con una gran falta de sueño y todavía adaptándome al horario del Este. La primera noche no dormí absolutamente nada, así que inicié el segundo día completamente agotado. Poco a poco logré descansar mejor y recuperé fuerzas conforme avanzaba la semana. During this week, I had the honor of participating as a representative of Frontera de Cristo at the Second International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), held at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City from May 5–8, 2026.

Thanks to the Presbyterian Church, which supported various partners around the world working on behalf of migrants, we were invited to take part in this important space for international dialogue and collaboration.

As a representative of Frontera de Cristo, I actively participated in meetings, dialogues, and working groups that began in January of this year with the goal of building a joint declaration focused on the dignity, protection, and human rights of migrants. After months of collaborative work among organizations, churches, and international representatives, this effort came to fruition with the adoption of the “Progress Declaration.”

The IMRF promotes safer, more orderly migration with respect for human rights. During the forum, key topics were addressed, including safe, orderly, and regular migration; the protection of migrant women, girls, and children; labor mobility; family reunification; access to basic services; and combating human trafficking and smuggling.

In addition, this space creates opportunities to strengthen cooperation among organizations, governments, and border communities in order to improve humanitarian assistance and protect the dignity of migrants.

Therefore, throughout this gathering, the importance of strengthening international cooperation and promoting migration policies centered on human rights and the dignity of every person was reaffirmed. This is what was agreed upon by all the nations that signed the IMRF agreement, with the exception of the United States, which did not sign it.

Mexico has shown support for this international cooperation, while the United States has maintained a position more focused on border security, migration control, and strengthening the border wall.

For example, in Douglas there is currently an increase in the federal budget for infrastructure, surveillance, and modernization by the government, resulting in a considerable number of migrants seeking asylum in the United States becoming stranded in Agua Prieta, since the commitments and contributions outlined in the IMRF are neither signed nor upheld by the U.S. government.

That being said, we must work to strengthen the migrant shelter “Centro de Atención a Migrantes Éxodus (CAME)” in order to support these individuals. Frontera de Cristo will continue supporting the shelter, which daily assists migrants and vulnerable families by providing:

• temporary shelter,

• food,

• basic care,

• guidance,

• humanitarian support,

• accompaniment for migrant women, children, and families.

In the future, if the shelter’s needs increase, additional support and resources could be sought through Mexican institutions such as the Sistema DIF, the Comisión Mexicana de Ayuda a Refugiados (COMAR), the Secretaría de Bienestar, and Cáritas Mexicana, since the Mexican government increased its budget for assisting people in transit, as well as for social and humanitarian programs, after signing the agreement.

This is how border wall policies and increased border enforcement continue to place pressure on Agua Prieta and Douglas. However, there is also the possibility of strengthening the humanitarian work of organizations such as CAME in order to continue supporting those who need it most.

In addition to the IMRF, on May 3 I had the opportunity to share and teach at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, where I spoke about the work we do at Frontera de Cristo accompanying migrant communities and promoting justice, hospitality, and human dignity at the border. Likewise, on May 10 I participated at University Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, once again sharing about our mission, experiences, and the impact of our community work with children, as well as speaking about productive projects.

This experience allowed me to exchange perspectives with leaders and organizations from different countries, strengthen international partnerships, and reaffirm Frontera de Cristo’s commitment to humanitarian accompaniment and the defense of migrant communities within the framework of the United Nations and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Durante esta semana tuve el honor de participar representando a Frontera de Cristo en el Segundo Foro de Examen de la Migración Internacional (International Migration Review Forum), celebrado en la sede de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York del 5 al 8 de mayo de 2026.

Gracias a la Iglesia Presbiteriana que apoyó a diversos socios alrededor del mundo que trabajan en favor de las personas migrantes, fuimos invitados a ser parte de este importante espacio de diálogo y colaboración internacional.

Como representante de Frontera de Cristo, participé activamente acompañando reuniones, diálogos y mesas de trabajo que comenzaron desde enero de este año con el propósito de construir una declaración conjunta enfocada en la dignidad, protección y derechos humanos de las personas migrantes. Después de meses de trabajo colaborativo entre organizaciones, iglesias y representantes internacionales, este esfuerzo logró concretarse con la adopción de la “Progress Declaration”.

El FEMI promueve una migración más segura, ordenada y con respeto a los derechos humanos, por lo que durante el foro se abordaron temas fundamentales relacionados con la migración segura, ordenada y regular, la protección de mujeres, niñas y niños migrantes, la movilidad laboral, la reunificación familiar, el acceso a servicios básicos y el combate a la trata y tráfico de personas.

Dicho esto, debemos trabajar en fortalecer al albergue “Centro de Atención a Migrantes Éxodus (CAME)” para apoyar estas personas. Frontera de Cristo seguirá apoyando al albergue, que diariamente brinda apoyo a personas migrantes y familias vulnerables ofreciendo:

• refugio temporal,

• alimentos,

• atención básica,

• orientación,

• apoyo humanitario,

• acompañamiento a mujeres, niños y familias migrantes.

En el futuro, si las necesidades del albergue aumentan, se podrían buscar más apoyo y recursos mediante instituciones mexicanas como: el Sistema DIF, la Comisión Mexicana de Ayuda a Refugiados (COMAR), la Secretaría de Bienestar y Cáritas Mexicana, ya que el gobierno mexicano incrementó su presupuesto para la ayuda de las personas en tránsito, así como de programas sociales y humanitarios al haber firmado el acuerdo.

Así, es como las políticas del muro y el aumento del control fronterizo continúan generando presión en Agua Prieta y Douglas. Sin embargo, también existe la posibilidad de fortalecer el trabajo humanitario de organizaciones como CAME para seguir apoyando a quienes más lo necesitan.

Asimismo, el 10 de mayo participé en la Iglesia Presbiteriana University en Buffalo, compartiendo nuevamente sobre nuestra misión, experiencias y el impacto del trabajo comunitario que tenemos con los niños y niñas, así como también hablé de los proyectos productivos.

Esta experiencia, me permitió intercambiar perspectivas con líderes y organizaciones de diferentes países, fortalecer alianzas internacionales y reafirmar el compromiso de Frontera de Cristo con el acompañamiento humanitario y la defensa de las comunidades migrantes dentro del marco de Naciones Unidas y la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible.

“¿Qué significan las fronteras para ti?”

Frecuentemente, cuando nuestro ministerio recibe delegaciones que visitan la comunidad de Douglas y Agua Prieta, les hacemos esta “sencilla” pregunta a la sombra del muro fronterizo que divide nuestra comunidad.

Muchas respuestas coinciden, aunque cada una lleva consigo experiencias y emociones propias. Aun así, hay palabras que se repiten constantemente: división, exclusión, separación.

Cuando escucho estas ideas, algo en mí se parte en dos. Por un lado, pienso en las costumbres y vínculos que se han construido en esta región, donde a veces parece que no existe un muro. En Agua Prieta celebramos el 4 de julio y disfrutamos de los fuegos artificiales, mientras que muchas personas de Douglas vienen en septiembre a compartir nuestras fiestas patrias entre conciertos, desfiles y celebraciones.

Pero, al mismo tiempo, no puedo dejar de pensar en quienes no tienen un documento que les da la posibilidad de cruzar esta línea divisoria libremente. En quienes quedan fuera de estas dinámicas binacionales e interculturales que la frontera también representa. Por eso entiendo cuando alguien la describe como un espacio de división.

A esto se suma la forma en que ciertos discursos han construido la idea de la frontera como un lugar de miedo y desconfianza, casi como si fuera un sitio que no debería conocerse. Se presenta como una realidad simple, reducida a blanco o negro.

Para mí, no es así.

La frontera es un espacio lleno de matices. Un lugar donde las realidades se entrelazan: lo bueno y lo difícil, lo incluyente y lo excluyente, el dolor y la belleza. Aquí conviven escenas contrastantes: personas que cruzan a diario para ver a sus familias, mientras otras son deportadas; culturas que se mezclan al punto de compartir tradiciones y lenguaje, mientras hay quienes pierden la vida buscando mejores oportunidades. Incluso, en medio de esta cercanía cotidiana, nuestros propios gobiernos muchas veces no logran entenderse.

Y, sin embargo, también está ahí el muro, firme e imponente.

Aun así, cuando los grupos pasan algunos días aquí, es sorprendente ver cómo sus ideas comienzan a transformarse. No puedo asegurar que todo lo que pensaban cambie por completo; algunas cosas coinciden con lo que imaginaban, otras les resultan totalmente nuevas. Y quiero ser clara: esto no se trata de idealizar ni de mostrar solo lo positivo. Se trata de reconocer que, cuando personas con historias diversas comparten vida y ministerio aquí, experimentan distintos niveles de conexión, transformación y renovación.

No tengo estadísticas que respalden esto. Lo que tengo es la experiencia de casi dos años en este ministerio, donde, visita tras visita, he sido testigo de estos cambios. Y lejos de parecerme algo repetitivo, lo veo como una expresión constantemente viva del amor, la compasión y la autenticidad de Dios.

Yo nací y crecí aquí, en una comunidad donde muchas decisiones importantes se toman lejos y durante mucho tiempo pensé que mi camino también estaba en otro lugar, pero hoy entiendo que fue aquí donde encontré mi propósito. Mirando hacia atrás, agradezco al ministerio y a quienes me ayudaron a valorar lo que antes no veía: una ciudad que recibe con los brazos abiertos, que abraza las diferencias y permite crecer.

Lo veo cada miércoles, en la mesa que compartimos durante los devocionales. Mis compañeros vienen de distintos lugares —Colombia, Chiapas, Tabasco, Durango, Carolina del Norte, Carolina del Sur, Sinaloa, entre otros— y, aun así, han hecho de esta comunidad su hogar y su misión.

Aquí se vive el dolor y la alegría al mismo tiempo: muros y alambres de púas conviven con la celebración, la unión y la esperanza. Así es como esta ciudad deja huella en quienes la visitan.

Hoy la veo como un agente de cambio. Un lugar que permanece en la memoria y en el corazón de quienes pasan por aquí. Agua Prieta va más allá de su territorio y su población; vive en las historias, en las fotografías y en las conversaciones que continúan lejos de esta frontera y que son compartidas por las personas que nos visitaron.

Por eso creo que el ministerio de Frontera de Cristo no solo muestra la realidad de la migración y la frontera, sino que, a través de sus acciones, refleja lo que, para mí, es el valor más hermoso transmitido por Jesús: la capacidad de acoger al prójimo, hacerlo sentir en casa y construir comunidad con él.

Me llena de alegría pensar que Dios ha elegido este lugar, mi tierra natal, para que muchas personas experimenten de su amor y su bondad. Y aunque, como en cualquier ciudad, hay retos por enfrentar, me siento profundamente orgullosa de ser de aquí y de lo que este lugar representa. “What do borders mean to you?”

Frequently, when our ministry receives delegations visiting the community of Douglas and Agua Prieta, we ask them this “simple” question in the shadow of the border wall that divides our community.

Many responses are similar, although each one carries its own experiences and emotions. Even so, certain words are repeated constantly: division, exclusion, separation.

When I hear these ideas, something inside me splits in two. On one hand, I think about the customs and relationships that have been built in this region, where sometimes it feels as though the wall does not exist. In Agua Prieta, we celebrate the Fourth of July and enjoy the fireworks, while many people from Douglas come in September to share in our Independence Day festivities through concerts, parades, and celebrations.

But at the same time, I cannot stop thinking about those who do not have a document that gives them the possibility of crossing this dividing line freely. About those who are left out of the binational and intercultural dynamics that the border also represents. That is why I understand when someone describes it as a space of division.

Added to this is the way certain narratives have shaped the idea of the border as a place of fear and distrust, almost as if it were somewhere that should not be known. It is presented as a simple reality, reduced to black or white.

For me, it is not like that.

The border is a space full of nuances. A place where realities intertwine: the good and the difficult, the inclusive and the exclusionary, pain and beauty. Here, contrasting scenes coexist: people crossing daily to see their families, while others are deported; cultures blending to the point of sharing traditions and language, while others lose their lives searching for better opportunities. Even amid this everyday closeness, our own governments often fail to understand one another.

And yet, the wall is still there, firm and imposing.

Even so, when groups spend a few days here, it is surprising to see how their ideas begin to transform. I cannot say that everything they believed changes completely; some things align with what they imagined, while others are entirely new to them. But in the conversations we have had, I have noticed something constant: they arrive seeking answers — political, social, cultural — and leave with something deeper.

They leave carrying the warmth of the community.

In this small city in the northern part of the state, people from major metropolitan areas arrive with questions, and when they leave, they often share that they are taking with them testimony, action, hope, and community.

And I want to be clear: this is not about idealizing or showing only the positive. It is about recognizing that when people with diverse stories share life and ministry here, they experience different levels of connection, transformation, and renewal.

I do not have statistics to support this. What I do have is the experience of nearly two years in this ministry, where, visit after visit, I have witnessed these changes. Far from seeming repetitive to me, I see them as a constantly living expression of God’s love, compassion, and authenticity.

I was born and raised here, in a community where many important decisions are made far away, and for a long time I thought my path was somewhere else too. But today I understand that it was here where I found my purpose. Looking back, I am grateful to the ministry and to those who helped me value what I once failed to see: a city that welcomes with open arms, embraces differences, and allows people to grow.

I see it every Wednesday at the table we share during devotionals. My coworkers come from different places — Colombia, Chiapas, Tabasco, Durango, North Carolina, South Carolina, Sinaloa, among others — and even so, they have made this community their home and their mission.

Here, pain and joy are lived at the same time: walls and barbed wire coexist with celebration, unity, and hope. This is how the city leaves its mark on those who visit.

Today, I see it as an agent of change. A place that remains in the memory and hearts of those who pass through here. Agua Prieta goes beyond its territory and population; it lives on in stories, photographs, and conversations that continue far from this border and are shared by the people who visited us.

That is why I believe the ministry of Frontera de Cristo not only reveals the reality of migration and the border, but also, through its actions, reflects what for me is the most beautiful value conveyed by Jesus: the ability to welcome one’s neighbor, make them feel at home, and build community with them.

It fills me with joy to think that God has chosen this place, my homeland, so that many people may experience His love and goodness. And although, like any city, there are challenges to face, I feel deeply proud to be from here and of what this place represents. Thank you to those who have allowed me to share my community with you and, with it, a part of who I am.

Because, in the end, it is not about me, but about the encounters, conversations, hugs, and stories that this place has made possible. And this has been possible because, for more than 40 years, Frontera de Cristo has woven together a space where the ordinary and the simple are transformed into something profoundly meaningful — a space where we can all live together under the same reality and as part of the same society: the children of God.

When the Interim Unified Agency decided it was ending World Mission and our service as Mission Co-workers, we felt deep sadness. In 2011, the national structure of the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico had chosen to end its partnership with all of border ministry without consultation, and now, fourteen years later, the national structure of the PCUSA was doing the same.

Amid the uncertainty cast by the national office’s decision, Miriam said “Mark, this is an opportunity for faith to flourish.” And while the past year has not always been easy, faith, and the incredible outpouring encouragement and support from many faith-filled churches and individuals from both sides of the border, has sustained us. On Saturday May 2, the Presbyteries of Grand Canyon and de Cristo commissioned us to continued service as Mission Co-workers with Frontera de Cristo.

The commissioning service brought us great hope and encouragement after an unfortunate and devastating loss. It fills us with joy to see the commitment of the two presbyteries of Arizona, as well as many churches and individuals and Frontera de Cristo, affirm our call to continue to walk together in search of a more just, peace-filled, and loving world.

We’ve always known in our heads that the Interim Unified Agency’s decision to end World Mission and the ministry to which we sensed a deep call and commitment was not the church’s—much less God’s—rejection of the ministry we had dedicated our lives to. But during the commissioning service, hearing the sermon from Co-moderator Tony Larson, seeing our partners from Frontera de Cristo, commissioners from both presbyteries as well as representatives from churches from Alabama, Michigan, South Carolina, and Virginia, and feeling surrounded by the Spirit when they laid hands on us and prayed, we knew—not just in our heads, but in our whole beings—that although the Interim Unified Agency had moved on from this particular model of relational and incarnational ministry, the broader church has not.

Thank you for your continued prayers, encouragement, and support to us and to Frontera de Cristo throughout this past year and into the exciting future that God has for us.

Cuando la Agencia Unificada Interina decidió poner fin a Misión Mundial y a nuestro servicio como colaboradores misioneros, sentimos una profunda tristeza. En 2011, la estructura nacional de la Iglesia Nacional Presbiteriana de México había decidido terminar su colaboración con todo el ministerio fronterizo sin consulta previa y ahora, catorce años después, la estructura nacional de la PCUSA estaba haciendo lo mismo.

En medio de la incertidumbre causada por la decisión de la oficina nacional, Miriam dijo: “Mark, esta es una oportunidad para que la fe florezca”. Y aunque el último año no siempre ha sido fácil, la fe y la increíble muestra de ánimo y apoyo de muchas iglesias e individuos llenos de fe de ambos lados de la frontera nos han sostenido. El sábado 2 de mayo, los presbiterios de Grand Canyon y de Cristo nos comisionaron para continuar sirviendo como colaboradores misioneros con Frontera de Cristo.

El servicio de comisionamiento nos trajo gran esperanza y ánimo después de una pérdida desafortunada y devastadora. Ecumenical Women recently hosted its annual “Girls on Fire” panel, an event highlighting young women’s perspectives in advocacy on justice, leadership and what it means to stand up for girls in their generation. Alongside three other women from Canada, the Netherlands and India, I was honored to be invited to participate in the panel while attending the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) as a Presbyterian delegate.

Advocacy has always been an important expression of my faith. I began contacting my elected officials in middle school through emails and phone calls to express my concerns, and by ninth grade, I was arranging in-person meetings with local leaders. The first place I drove after receiving my learner’s permit was to a school board meeting addressing concerns about gun violence. For two summers, I had the privilege of serving as a fellow with the Presbyterian Office of Public Witness in Washington, D.C., where I continued to communicate the concerns of the General Assembly. Now, I serve as a Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) at the U.S./Mexico border, living and working in the communities of Agua Prieta, Sonora, and Douglas, Arizona.

In early March, I was part of a joint delegation of almost 70 Presbyterians who traveled to New York City for CSW70, the United Nations’ annual review of gender equality. During the event, delegates have the opportunity to attend sessions hosted by both UN Member States and non-governmental organizations.

During the panel at the Church Center for the United Nations, we were asked a variety of questions related to justice and inclusion, particularly for women and girls. When asked which women or girls inspire us to care about justice, we all shared that our mothers and grandmothers were instrumental in planting that seed within us. I also spoke about how deeply I am inspired by women serving in clergy and other church leadership roles, especially given that this remains a polarizing topic across denominations. When asked about moments in which we have witnessed injustice toward women or girls, I reflected on the stories I encounter daily while living alongside the community at the U.S./Mexico border during my year of service.

When I think about the word justice, I am drawn to the themes woven throughout Scripture, which reveal a God of love, kindness, and mercy. In passages such as Micah 6:8, Matthew 25, Psalm 82:3, Isaiah 1:17, Deuteronomy 32:4 and Psalm 89:14, justice is not exclusive, as women and girls are included among those celebrated as being created in the image of a loving God.

Throughout the week our delegation attended CSW, the fruits of the Spirit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control were evident in the actions of those within the faith community. The most common theme shared was hope: hope as we walk humbly with God, trusting that all people may experience the justice promised to them in Scripture.

Mujeres Ecuménicas organizó recientemente su panel anual “Girls on Fire”, un evento que destaca las perspectivas de mujeres jóvenes en la defensa de la justicia, el liderazgo y lo que significa alzar la voz por las niñas de su generación. La defensa siempre ha sido una expresión importante de mi fe. El pasado martes 3 de febrero, tuve la oportunidad de acompañar a una de las sedes del Programa de Enriquecimiento Educativo al Rancho San Bernardino, con la finalidad de pasar una tarde en convivencia y armonía junto a quienes forman parte del equipo de Cuenca Los Ojos y voluntarios que se encontraban visitando este espacio.

Cuenca Los Ojos es una organización no gubernamental que trabaja por la conservación de flora y fauna silvestre, abogando especialmente por aquellos ecosistemas y animales que se han visto afectados por la construcción del muro de EE.UU. en su frontera Sur con México.

Este muro, no solo intenta dividir a las personas, sino también, afecta diariamente a las especies que comparten la Tierra con nosotros: las luces establecidas en él, ciegan a aves y animales voladores, siendo un gran ejemplo de este caso el murciélago. Una especie que se encarga de polinizar y controlar plagas, difícilmente puede realizar este proceso tan importante en el perímetro cerca del muro;

Animales como el oso, el venado y el jaguar son incapaces de seguir su trayecto de migración al no caber entre los postes del muro, por lo que las manadas enfrentan irregularidades en su ciclo natural de movimiento, reproducción y búsqueda de recursos;

O, cuerpos de agua como ríos y arroyos, ven interrumpido su flujo, mismo que es sumamente necesario para la creación y existencia de vida animal y vegetal.

Estos datos, los he aprendido en las distintas ocasiones que he visitado este lugar con los niños y realmente, cada vez que se tiene una visita de esta índole, aprendemos cosas nuevas y maravillosas de la naturaleza y del espacio que nos rodea, ya sea de manera grupal o individual. Si bien, esta no es la primera vez que el Programa de Enriquecimiento Educativo y Cuenca Los Ojos se unen para llevar a cabo actividades integrales en beneficio de las y los niños, considero que la esencia de este encuentro fue diferente.

Mientras que el año pasado (2025), la idea de los encuentros entre ambas organizaciones fue llevar a cabo un proyecto de “bombas de semilla de agave” --- donde los niños creaban pequeñas bolitas de tierra con semillas de agave que posteriormente eran tiradas en el campo para florecer --- mismos que se encontraron llenos de productividad, labor y colaboración en equipo, esta reunión se centró en el simple hecho de estar presentes: presentes en el tiempo, espacio y entre nosotros mismos.

Nuestro día de excursión empezó alrededor de la 1:00 p.m., cuando el camión que nos llevó hasta el Rancho San Bernardino nos recogió en la sede. Durante el camino hacia nuestro destino (que fue alrededor de 35 minutos), el tiempo de conexión no se hizo esperar: los niños admiraban la vegetación, jugaban entre sí y convivían con todas las personas que tenían cerca a sus asientos.

Durante este trayecto de alrededor de 50 minutos, en el piso pudimos observar huellas de gato montés y de venado y en esta precisa parte del recorrido, me llenó de ternura ver cómo un grupo de niños se tomó el tiempo para explicarme dónde se encontraban las huellas: se detuvieron a analizarlas junto conmigo y a compartirme la información que Omar, uno de los líderes en Cuenca, les había mencionado acerca de estos rastros.

Al regresar, tuvimos tiempo de despedirnos y emprendimos nuestro camino de vuelta hacia Agua Prieta. Sinceramente, en el trayecto no pude evitar reflexionar en la hermosa sencillez de esta visita que giró en torno a momentos sencillos pero significativos: jugar, caminar, compartir la comida y disfrutar de la naturaleza.

Fue así, como me di cuenta de la importancia del estar totalmente en presencia y compromiso en el tiempo y espacio en los que la vida y tu comunidad te colocan; pero, de la misma manera pensé en el hecho que, muchas veces, le dedicamos muy poco tiempo a estas actividades que te ayudan a embellecer tu percepción de la vida.

En este caso, yo pude notar la esencia del estar y del disfrutar sin límites con los niños; lo vi en cómo se emocionaban con cualquier detalle. Por ejemplo, cuando en nuestro camino al rancho vimos un par de caballos y gritaron de la emoción o cuando cada que veíamos un autobús o tráiler, se entusiasmaban por saludarlos.

Pero, más allá de estos jugueteos inocentes entre niños, percibí cómo las barreras entre personas se aprenden, se enseñan y se transmiten, más no se nace con ellas. Estos, son niños que en su mayoría no había visto antes y, aun así, desde el momento en el que llegué a la sede hasta que me bajé del autobús de vuelta, ellos me preguntaban: “¿Qué animales generalmente hay en un rancho?”, “¿Jugamos?”, “¿Me ayudas con esto?”

Así, es como he estado reflexionando en las veces que, para mí, ha sido difícil ser vulnerable, preguntar y conectar con una persona que no he visto jamás en mi vida antes. No puedo evitar pensar en cómo un grupo de personitas que deben ser protegidas, amadas y valoradas a toda costa (como todos los niños), en lugar de recibir alguna orientación de mi parte estaban enseñándome a no tener barreras en mi mente ni en mi corazón, a relacionarme con mi propia comunidad y a ver en todas las personas a un amigo o a una amiga.

Estar presente en este tipo de actividades que te invitan a conectar y a disfrutar, para mí, es el mayor acto de resistencia a todas aquellas cuestiones que pueden generar brechas y separación entre personas: estrés, desinterés, diferencias ideológicas, egoísmo.

Por eso, doy gracias a Dios por las iniciativas, organizaciones y proyectos en la comunidad que siempre están buscando generar un impacto positivo en el mundo, en las personas y en la visión que tenemos de la vida. Cuenca Los Ojos ha sido una organización que me ha ayudado a conectar con la naturaleza. El Programa de Enriquecimiento Educativo me ha enseñado a conectar con los niños de mi comunidad y con la niña que algún día fui.

Agradezco toda la pasión, amor e interés transmitidos por las personas en Cuenca Los Ojos y en el Programa de Enriquecimiento Educativo para hacer de esta, una tarde de inspiración y renovación.

Y, por último, reconozco que la frase característica del Programa de Enriquecimiento Educativo es cierta: “Espacio seguro, todos bienvenidos e importantes”. Más allá de edades, ocupaciones y preferencias, en momentos como estos, todos somos hijos de Dios llevando a cabo uno de los principios más hermosos de su evangelio, buscar el gozo, el amor y la paz junto a nuestro prójimo.

Last Tuesday, February 3, I had the opportunity to accompany one of the Educational Enrichment Program sites to Rancho San Bernardino, with the purpose of spending an afternoon in fellowship and harmony alongside the team members of Cuenca Los Ojos and volunteers who were visiting this space.

Cuenca Los Ojos is a non-governmental organization that works for the conservation of wildlife flora and fauna, especially advocating for ecosystems and animals that have been affected by the construction of the U.S. wall along its southern border with Mexico.

This wall not only attempts to divide people, but also daily affects the species that share the Earth with us: the lights installed along it blind birds and flying animals, with the bat being a clear example. A species responsible for pollination and pest control can hardly carry out this vital process in the perimeter near the wall.

Animals such as bears, deer, and jaguars are unable to continue their migration routes because they cannot pass between the wall’s posts, causing herds to face disruptions in their natural cycles of movement, reproduction, and resource searching.

Bodies of water such as rivers and streams also see their flow interrupted, which is essential for the creation and existence of animal and plant life.

I have learned these facts during the different times I have visited this place with the children, and truly, each visit of this kind brings new and wonderful lessons about nature and the space that surrounds us, whether collectively or individually. Although this is not the first time that the Educational Enrichment Program and Cuenca Los Ojos have joined together to carry out comprehensive activities for the benefit of the children, I believe the essence of this gathering was different.

While last year (2025) the idea behind the meetings between both organizations was to carry out an “agave seed bomb” project — where the children created small balls of soil with agave seeds that were later thrown into the field to bloom — and these activities were filled with productivity, work, and teamwork, this meeting focused on the simple act of being present: present in time, in space, and with one another.

Our excursion day began around 1:00 p.m., when the bus that would take us to Rancho San Bernardino picked us up at the site. During the approximately 35-minute ride, connection happened naturally: the children admired the vegetation, played among themselves, and interacted with everyone seated near them.

Upon arriving at the ranch, we got off the bus, formed a circle, and excitement began to flow. We divided into groups, and while some played soccer and others jumped rope, a few girls asked me to explore the place. More children joined us, and together we explored part of the land and the agave greenhouses located on the ranch.

Later, we shared a snack, and afterward about 35 to 40 of us went together to visit two of the wetlands located in San Bernardino. During this approximately 50-minute walk, we observed bobcat and deer tracks on the ground. At that precise moment in the journey, I felt a deep tenderness seeing how a group of children took the time to explain to me where the tracks were. They stopped to analyze them with me and shared the information that Omar, one of the leaders at Cuenca, had told them about these signs.

When we returned, we had time to say goodbye and began our journey back to Agua Prieta. Honestly, during the ride I couldn’t help but reflect on the beautiful simplicity of this visit, which revolved around simple yet meaningful moments: playing, walking, sharing food, and enjoying nature.

That is when I realized the importance of being fully present and committed to the time and space where life and your community place you. At the same time, I thought about how often we devote very little time to these activities that help beautify our perception of life.

In this case, I noticed the essence of simply being and enjoying without limits with the children; I saw it in how they became excited about every little detail. For example, when on our way to the ranch we saw a pair of horses and they shouted with excitement, or whenever we saw a bus or truck and they eagerly waved hello.

Beyond these innocent childhood moments, I perceived how barriers between people are learned, taught, and passed down — we are not born with them. Most of these were children I had never seen before, and yet from the moment I arrived at the site until I stepped off the bus on the way back, they asked me: “What animals are usually found on a ranch?” “Shall we play?” “Can you help me with this?”

This led me to reflect on the times when it has been difficult for me to be vulnerable, to ask questions, and to connect with someone I have never met before. I cannot help but think about how a group of little ones who should be protected, loved, and valued at all costs — like all children — instead of receiving guidance from me, were teaching me not to have barriers in my mind or in my heart, to connect with my own community, and to see in every person a friend.

Being present in activities that invite connection and enjoyment is, for me, the greatest act of resistance against all the things that can create gaps and separation between people: stress, indifference, ideological differences, selfishness.

For this reason, I thank God for the initiatives, organizations, and projects in the community that constantly seek to generate a positive impact on the world, on people, and on the way we view life. Cuenca Los Ojos has been an organization that has helped me connect with nature. The Educational Enrichment Program has taught me to connect with the children in my community and with the little girl I once was.

I am grateful for all the passion, love, and dedication shown by the people at Cuenca Los Ojos and the Educational Enrichment Program in making this an afternoon of inspiration and renewal.

Finally, I acknowledge that the Educational Enrichment Program’s signature phrase is true: “Safe space, everyone welcome and important.” Beyond ages, occupations, and preferences, in moments like these, we are all children of God carrying out one of the most beautiful principles of His gospel: seeking joy, love, and peace alongside our neighbor.

“I guess they’ll have to arrest me, too.”

These words are prophetic words.

These words are healing words.

These words lifted my spirits when I was very discouraged.

And these words were the last words I expected to hear from Shirley Jewell, the 92 year-old founding member of Frontera de Cristo whom I was visiting on July 2, 2019.

When I arrived that day in Shirley’s living room, she almost immediately asked me, “Mark, what is the matter? You look so down.” Shirley has always shown me and my family such care and concern, but that day she was visibly worried about me.

I shared with her that I had just learned that our government was going to retry Scott Warren, a professor of Arizona State University and a volunteer with No More Deaths. He had been arrested and charged with two counts of criminal conspiracy in the furtherance of illegal entry and harboring of two men from Honduras who were in distress in the Sonoran Desert.

Earlier in the summer, Joca Gallegos and I had responded to the call from our sister organization No More Deaths for clergy to be present at Scott’s first trial in which he testified. It was one of the most spiritual experiences I have ever had. With deep humility and calmness, Scott shared without fear about his life-giving actions. His testimony was grounded in three things: reverence for creation, the importance of recognizing the dignity of every human being, and the practice of hospitality found in almost every spiritual tradition.

Ten people on the jury voted to acquit him and two voted to convict. Despite the lopsided tally, our government announced earlier that day to retry him. I told Shirley how disappointed I was in our government, first of all to try him in the first place, threatening him with 20 years in prison and a $200,000 fine, but then after such a lopsided hung jury to decide to spend so much more time and energy and money to retry him for doing what Jesus, in Matthew 25, clearly said we are to do. I lamented that our government was increasingly declaring that it was illegal to be Christian.

Shirley looked at me and said: “Well, I guess that they are going to have to arrest me, too.”

She went on to tell me how over the years she had opened her doors to many people who were in transit, providing food, water, a listening ear, prayer, a phone to call loved ones. She said she never asked if they had papers to be in the country legally, she only saw human beings that God called her to love. These surprising words broke through my despair and unleashed a fountain of hope and challenged me not to lose faith.

Shirley grew up on a ranch in New Mexico and when she was a child, many of her friends spoke Spanish. She also took Spanish in high school and college, so when she and her husband John moved to Douglas, Arizona, in the 1960s, she was glad to be able to communicate with people in both English and Spanish. Both Shirley and John were educators by vocation; she was a teacher at Stevenson Elementary School and he was one of the first teachers at Cochise College.

They joined First Presbyterian Church. Shirley sang in the choir, was a leader in the Presbyterian Women’s group, and served as an elected elder of the church.

In 1984, when leaders of the national Presbyterian churches of Mexico and the United States were looking for leaders in Douglas to help found a binational ministry and to create a new model of being in ministry together, Shirley said yes.

Over the years, she has told me over and over again that she didn’t know why she was asked because “I didn’t really know much and didn’t think I had anything to offer, except maybe knowing a little Spanish.” But Shirley said yes.

In an interview with Steve Zeoli in 2023, she mentioned not knowing what to expect, but that the “excitement of being part of something new…just imagining what could happen…the two countries and churches maybe getting together somehow and understanding each other. So that was a nice thing, I thought, getting together our cultures, understanding one another. We lived right next door. Why not know each other and understand one another?”

To this day, the core tenet of Frontera de Cristo is cultivating relationships and understanding across borders as we seek to respond in faith to the realities of migration and the realities of the drug culture.

Shirley cherished the unexpected relationships which she formed over the years through the ministry of Frontera de Cristo. Amelia del Pozo, a single mother from San Luis Potosi, was Shirley being interviewed by Steve Zeoli in her living room, August 2023 another of the early founders of Frontera de Cristo and a strong leader of the ministry for many years. The first Presbyterian worship services in Agua Prieta were held in her apartment in 1985.

“Amelia was a leader of leaders and a real go getter. You didn’t fool her. And she corrected quite a few men, too.” Shirley shared while remembering how this binational feminine duo of Frontera de Cristo sometimes encountered pushbacks from the macho culture. “There were so many things that we were not supposed to do as women, but God called us to be in this ministry and we were on a journey together.”

Shirley, together with Amelia and other early strong women leaders, set a path to take away obstacles for female leadership in the ministry. Because they said yes to God, they opened the door for Frontera de Cristo to be blessed by incredible female leaders throughout the years.

In 2016, when Shirley was serving her last active term on the Frontera de Cristo Board of Directors, she met Mara, Amelia’s granddaughter, for the first time as a grown-up, at the construction site of Café Justo y Más, a partnership of Café Justo, the CATPSIC drug rehab center, and Frontera de Cristo. Mara was the first manager of the Café Justo y Más coffee shop and was overseeing its construction. She currently serves on the Board of Frontera de Cristo.

Reflecting on the founding of Café Justo y Más, Shirley said: “I think it is marvelous. It’s a place where everybody meets. It’s a place also where we as US Americans who know nothing about Mexico meet and can begin to get to know the rich culture and faith of the Mexican people. [It is a place] where folks from Mexico can know who we are as Anglo Christians, and we can learn from them.”

Over the years, almost without fail, one of the first things Shirley asks me when I arrive for a visit is “how are we doing?” While she has not been able to be as active over the last years as she would have liked to have been in the ministry, she continues to hold the ministry deep in her heart and in her prayers.

“Being a part of Frontera de Cristo has just been marvelous. It has been perhaps not the most marvelous part of my life but one of the most marvelous parts of my life. It’s absolutely wonderful to have two languages going at the same time and there are no finer people than the people from Mexico I have worked with—very loving and giving.”

“I thought I was doing something God wanted me to do. I think God expects us to love everyone, even though we are not always very lovable. But we are called to take care of one another and do what we can. I’m so happy that I have been a part of Frontera de Cristo. And I think that God is as well.”

When Shirley said yes to God’s call to be a part of a crazy thing called binational ministry, she did not imagine what it would become. The seeds that she and Amelia planted—as have many other women and men who said yes—have grown into many different plants and have borne fruit way beyond what they could ever have imagined.

“It’s a dream came true. I didn't really have that dream ’til I got here.”

Shirley died on January 21st at the age of 98 in the home where she and John raised their daughters. During the last weeks of her life, she rested in the living room where throughout the years she welcomed friends, family, the hungry, the thirsty, and friends she had never met before. She received the loving care of her daughters Robin and Wendy with the support of hospice.

During a recent visit, before I left, I asked Shirley what she would like us to pray for. She said, “Frontera de Cristo and my daughters. Pray that they will be okay when I am gone. Don’t pray for me, I am in God’s hands.”

Le compartí que acababa de enterarme de que nuestro gobierno iba a volver a juzgar a Scott Warren, profesor de la Universidad Estatal de Arizona y voluntario de No More Deaths. Había sido arrestado y acusado de dos cargos de conspiración criminal para facilitar la entrada ilegal y de dar refugio a dos hombres de Honduras que se encontraban en peligro en el desierto de Sonora.

En una entrevista con Steve Zeoli en 2023, mencionó que no sabía qué esperar, pero que la “emoción de ser parte de algo nuevo… solo imaginar lo que podría pasar… que los dos países y las iglesias quizá pudieran unirse de alguna manera y entenderse entre sí. Así que eso fue algo bonito, pensé: unir nuestras culturas, entendernos unos a otros. Vivíamos justo al lado. ¿Por qué no conocernos y comprendernos?”

Hasta el día de hoy, el principio fundamental de Frontera de Cristo es cultivar relaciones y entendimiento a través de las fronteras, mientras buscamos responder con fe a las realidades de la migración y a las realidades de la cultura de las drogas.

Shirley valoraba profundamente las relaciones inesperadas que fue formando a lo largo de los años a través del ministerio de Frontera de Cristo. Amelia del Pozo, una madre soltera de San Luis Potosí, fue otra de las primeras fundadoras de Frontera de Cristo y una líder fuerte del ministerio durante muchos años. Los primeros servicios de adoración presbiterianos en Agua Prieta se llevaron a cabo en su departamento en 1985.

“Amelia era una líder de líderes y una verdadera mujer de acción. No se dejaba engañar. Y también corrigió a unos cuantos hombres”. Así lo compartió Shirley al recordar cómo este dúo femenino binacional de Frontera de Cristo a veces se encontraba con resistencias provenientes de la cultura machista. “Había muchas cosas que se suponía que no debíamos hacer como mujeres, pero Dios nos llamó a estar en este ministerio y estábamos en ese camino juntas”.

Shirley, junto con Amelia y otras mujeres líderes fuertes de los primeros años, abrió un camino para eliminar los obstáculos al liderazgo femenino dentro del ministerio. Porque dijeron que sí a Dios, abrieron la puerta para que Frontera de Cristo fuera bendecida, a lo largo de los años, con líderes mujeres verdaderamente extraordinarias.

En 2016, cuando Shirley estaba cumpliendo su último período activo en la Junta Directiva de Frontera de Cristo, conoció a Mara, la nieta de Amelia, por primera vez ya como adulta, en el sitio de construcción de Café Justo y Más, una alianza entre Café Justo, el centro de rehabilitación de drogas CATPSIC y Frontera de Cristo.

Mara fue la primera gerente de Café Justo y Más y estuvo a cargo de supervisar la construcción de la cafetería. Actualmente forma parte de la Junta Directiva de Frontera de Cristo.

Al reflexionar sobre la fundación de Café Justo y Más, Shirley dijo: “Creo que es algo maravilloso. Es un lugar donde todo el mundo se encuentra. Es también un lugar donde nosotros, como estadounidenses que no sabemos nada de México, nos encontramos y podemos empezar a conocer la rica cultura y la fe del pueblo mexicano. (Es un lugar) donde la gente de México puede conocer quiénes somos nosotros como cristianos anglos, y donde nosotros podemos aprender de ellos”.

A lo largo de los años, casi sin falta, una de las primeras cosas que Shirley me pregunta cuando llego de visita es: “¿Cómo vamos?” Aunque en los últimos años no ha podido estar tan activa en el ministerio como le hubiera gustado, continúa llevando el ministerio muy dentro de su corazón y en sus oraciones.

“Ser parte de Frontera de Cristo ha sido simplemente maravilloso. Quizás no haya sido la parte más maravillosa de mi vida, pero sí una de las más maravillosas. Es absolutamente maravilloso poder hablar dos idiomas al mismo tiempo, y no hay gente mejor que la gente de México con la que he trabajado: muy cariñosa y generosa.”

“Pensé que estaba haciendo algo que Dios quería que hiciera. Creo que Dios espera que amemos a todas las personas, aunque no siempre seamos muy amables o fáciles de amar. Pero estamos llamados a cuidarnos unos a otros y a hacer lo que esté a nuestro alcance. Estoy muy feliz de haber sido parte de Frontera de Cristo. Y creo que Dios también lo está”.

Cuando Shirley dijo sí al llamado de Dios para ser parte de algo tan “loco” como un ministerio binacional, no imaginó en qué se convertiría. Las semillas que ella y Amelia sembraron —al igual que muchas otras mujeres y hombres que dijeron sí— han crecido hasta convertirse en muchas plantas distintas y han dado frutos mucho más allá de lo que jamás podrían haber imaginado.

“Es un sueño hecho realidad. En realidad, no tenía ese sueño hasta que llegué aquí”.

Shirley falleció el 21 de enero, a los 98 años, en el hogar donde ella y John criaron a sus hijas. Durante las últimas semanas de su vida, descansó en la sala de estar donde, a lo largo de los años, dio la bienvenida a amistades, familiares, a quienes tenían hambre, a quienes tenían sed y a personas que nunca había conocido antes. Recibió el cuidado amoroso de sus hijas, Robin y Wendy, con el apoyo de cuidados paliativos.

Durante una visita reciente, antes de irme, le pregunté a Shirley por qué le gustaría que oráramos. Ella dijo: “Por Frontera de Cristo y por mis hijas. Oren para que estén bien cuando yo ya no esté. No oren por mí; estoy en las manos de Dios”.

Zacarías 8, emana aromas mesiánicos, apocalípticos y escatológicos, es una revelación celestial pero también un reconocimiento a los hijos y siervos de Dios que se mantienen firmes. “El remanente de Israel” en tiempos del rey Dario, miró la reconstrucción de su ciudad, que parecía imposible, aun así no perdieron la fe y se esforzaron porque encontraron ánimo en las promesas de Jehova.“Nuestro Padre”.

Versículos 4,5

Zechariah chapter 8 is an answer to the great question: How long, Lord?

I want to begin by acknowledging God’s work in our communities, recalling the words of the Gospel: “You are the light of the world... the salt of the earth.” Therefore, I thank God for all my brothers and sisters across the planet who, like me, every day seek to be that ray of light that carries love, faith, and hope, a handful of salt that fights for peace and justice. Thank you for not giving up, for finding strength when all seems lost, for looking to Jesus when you thought it was all over. Thank you for all the men and women of faith who have worked with great determination day after day, hand-in-hand with God, to spread the good news and expand His kingdom. What would this world be without them, without you, who represent the many like you who have not given up? Because through us and with us, God is establishing His kingdom. The question is: how long, Lord?

Zechariah 8 exudes messianic, apocalyptic, and eschatological aromas. It is a heavenly revelation, but also a recognition of God’s children and servants who remain steadfast. “The remnant of Israel,” during the time of King Darius, saw the reconstruction of their city, which seemed impossible. Yet they did not lose faith and strove for courage, finding encouragement in the promises of Jehovah, “Our Father.”

Today, these words, with sweetness and relevance, springing from grace, are reincarnated in the communities, large or small, where God has placed us as salt and light, to work together for peace, justice, and mercy. Surely on more than one occasion, we have said, “How long, Lord?” But His Spirit expands our vision to contemplate heavenly beauty and to believe that old men and women will still dwell in our city as a testimony (because nothing and no one will take their lives out of season). The streets of our city will be filled with boys and girls playing (safe and free from violence).

Verses 4,5

4 - Thus says the Lord of Hosts: “Old men and old women will sit again in the streets of Jerusalem, each holding his staff because of his age.”

5 - “Boys and girls will fill the streets of the city and play in them.”

I firmly believe in the prophetic relevance of these lines for our people. I believe it is a living and active Word that suggests “the already and the not completely,” which renews our strength to stand firm in the breach.

Seeing the boys and girls learning Kingdom values at the LDSV, confirms this. I imagine that in a few years this remnant of Jehovah will see the seed of peace, the vine will bear its fruit and yield its own produce from the land.

Verses 11, 12

11 - “But I will no longer treat the remnant of this people as I did in the past,” declares the Lord of Hosts.

12 - “There will be peace when sowing is done, and the vines will yield their fruit; the earth will yield its crops, and the sky will send down its dew. All these I will give as an inheritance to the remnant of this people.”

These children have become a “magnetic force of love that draws their families to Christ.” Working with them is never a waste of time or resources, but quite the opposite.

I conclude by thanking God for these apocalyptic and eschatological times He allows us to live through. Until when, Lord? My prayer is: “Our Father, bless the children and their families who have embraced the word with joy, and also those who will do so at another time. Give us strength and renew our faith to continue collaborating in your kingdom.”

On the Tuesday before Christmas Day, as I was crossing the border on foot into the United States for the 1302nd “Healing Our Borders” prayer vigil, I was struck by the image of the US flag behind the concertina wire. I was also conscious of the DANGER DO NOT ENTER signs that are plastered on both sides of the 18-foot steel bollard wall that we have built to divide ourselves from our neighbors to the south... especially the humble neighbors of whom Mary sang in the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), or as Eduardo Galeano said “los nadies del mundo/the nobodies of the world,” or “Los Olvidados/The Forgotten Ones” that Luis Buñuel wrote about in his 1950 documentary. Every Tuesday since December 12, 2000, we have gathered at 5:15 pm to remember our siblings who have died crossing the border. We do not know much about the 487 persons who have died in Cochise County (only a small portion of the more than 10,000 who have died borderwide) following President Bill Clinton’s implementation of the “prevention through deterrence” border policy. That policy poured billions of dollars into fortifying the border, intentionally using mountains and deserts as lethal deterrents to migration. This policy has been expanded under each successive administration, whether Democratic or Republican.

As I stood in line, I was thinking about how our government has continued to expand the border enforcement zone into the interior of the US, and how it is actively recruiting tens of thousands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to deport those who are living in the US without documentation. Despite their rhetoric of going after hardened criminals, the vast majority of the persons being deported are mothers, fathers, sisters, and/or brothers who are supporting the US and have no criminal background.

The foreman for a remodeling project of one of our partner churches in Nebraska was detained by more than a dozen masked men and deported to Mexico in less than a week’s time. A father of two teenagers, he had lived in the US for 33 years, since he was 11 years old. He was sent back to Mexico, a country he had not been in since his parents brought him to the US.

Many immigrant communities in the interior of the US are living in fear of this deportation force that demonizes whole groups of people. This summer, our mission delegation to our partner church in Nebraska visited the folklore ballet that their church hosts in their PEACE Community Center. Usually there were more than 25 children and youth participating, but this year participation has declined substantially because of the fear—there were just 7 participants when we were there because parents are afraid to be out in public and do not want to be separated from their children by ICE.

Our colleague David Bonilla lamented at a recent vigil that those who had survived the desert and have been working for years in the US are now being aggressively pursued by a government that has decided to prioritize going after immigrants over real dangers such as white collar crime, gun crimes, domestic terrorist groups, hate crimes, etc.

Our raising up this deportation force reminds me of how Herod raised up a force that sought to deport Jesus back across the divine/human border that he had crossed as a vulnerable babe. Jesus survived when Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt with him as refugees to escape the policies that led to the deaths of thousands of male babies (Matthew 2).

During my first year here on the border, my brothers David and Carl visited me during the week before Christmas. Pastor Chuy Gallegos was giving them a tour of the border when David saw two men perched on the top of the fence looking east. David asked: “What are they doing?” Pastor Chuy responded: “Waiting for the right time to cross the border.”

The right time for Jesus to cross the divine/human border was not without risk. That first Christmas, God did not wait to send Jesus into a world where peace, hope, joy and love reigned; instead, Jesus entered a world of conflict, despair, sadness, and hate.

The concept of NO ROOM IN THE INN is as prominent as ever on the US borders and is being illuminated in interior communities of the US as well. It is precisely in the midst of fear-filled communities whose vulnerable residents are being threatened by increasingly inhospitable policies that Jesus is born—Emmanuel—God with us.

When we light the candles of Advent on Christmas Day, we use a simple litany that we learned from one of the families of the church during a Noche Navideña many years ago:

¿Podemos mirar una herida que no es nuestra y sentirla como propia?

“Hoy no solo les presento una exposición de arte; les presento el viacrucis de nuestros hermanos migrantes. Esta es mi manera de decir: Miren, sientan, comprendan.”

La migración es un fenómeno que ha marcado la historia de la humanidad.

Cada una de estas obras NO son solo imágenes; son testimonios visuales del calvario que se vive en la ruta y también en la llegada a su destino ya que muchas veces el calvario y el peligro no cesan por el arribo al destino, sino que se puede intensificar, es un nuevo calvario emocional y social.

• La Persecución Constante: Si antes el peligro era el desierto o el crimen organizado, ahora es la sombra de la autoridad. Es el terror de que la autoridad, un uniforme o un control de carretera te arrebate lo poco que has logrado y te devuelva al punto de partida. Es vivir con el alma en vilo, día tras día.

• El Señalamiento Social: Son juzgados. Son señalados, estigmatizados, vistos como una amenaza o un problema, no como la persona que arriesgó todo por sobrevivir. Sus sueños son ignorados, su valor es invisible.

Mi intención al realizar estas obras son: Empatía y Comprensión.

Sé que son imágenes que duelen, que pueden ser difíciles de mirar. Pero si a nosotros nos duele verlas por un instante, ¿Cuánto dolor siente quien lo vive por meses? Mi objetivo no es chocar, sino conmover. No es mostrar una fantasía, es exponer una verdad desnuda. Y el arte es un puente que nos acerca a esa realidad.

El sufrimiento del migrante termina en la esperanza de una vida mejor. Y nosotros como sociedad debemos aprender a reconocer la dignidad de la persona migrante.

¿Qué puede hacer el arte que un documental o una noticia no pueden? Tocar el alma y la memoria a través de la emoción pura.

Esta exposición es una invitación a la humanidad. Un recordatorio de que la compasión no conoce fronteras.

Path of Hope

Tired but firm steps, carrying in their wake the wound of displacement and the seed of hope, dreaming of a horizon where life flourishes without borders.

How close are we to the pain of a stranger?

Can we look at a wound that is not our own and feel it as if it were?

“Today I am not only presenting an art exhibition; I am presenting the Way of the Cross of our migrant brothers and sisters. This is my way of saying: Look, feel, understand.”

Migration is a phenomenon that has marked the history of humanity.

Each of these works is NOT just images; they are visual testimonies of the ordeal lived along the route and also upon arrival at the destination, since many times the suffering and danger do not end with reaching that destination. Instead, they can intensify—it becomes a new emotional and social ordeal.

• Constant Persecution: If before the danger was the desert or organized crime, now it is the shadow of authority. It is the terror that authority—a uniform or a roadside checkpoint—will strip away what little you have achieved and send you back to the starting point. It is living with your soul on edge, day after day.

• Social Stigmatization: They are judged. They are singled out, stigmatized, seen as a threat or a problem, not as the person who risked everything to survive. Their dreams are ignored; their worth is invisible.

• Living Cornered: Life becomes a labyrinth of fear. They live on the margins, without a voice, without full rights, forced to work in the shadows. They feel cornered, trapped between the fear of being discovered and the need to move forward. The long-dreamed-of refuge becomes an invisible cage.

That is why the compassion we ask for is not only for the road they have traveled, but for the life they are forced to live. My art is a mirror for society, so that we may see the pain that we, inadvertently or actively, continue to inflict.

• The Risk: The train known as “La Bestia,” the desert.

• Physical Suffering: Hunger, thirst, wounds, exhaustion.

• Violence and Abuse: The risks of kidnapping, extortion, rape.

• Loneliness: Leaving family behind.

My intention in creating these works is empathy and understanding.

I know these are images that hurt, that can be difficult to look at. But if it hurts us to see them for a moment, how much pain does the one who lives it for months feel? My goal is not to shock, but to move. It is not to show a fantasy; it is to expose a naked truth. And art is a bridge that brings us closer to that reality.

The suffering of the migrant ends in the hope of a better life. And we, as a society, must learn to recognize the dignity of the migrant person.

What can art do that a documentary or the news cannot? Touch the soul and memory through pure emotion.

This exhibition is an invitation to our humanity. A reminder that compassion knows no borders.

The title of this exhibition, “Between Courage and Fear,” is not a simple description; it is the pulse of every person who sets out on the journey.

• Fear: It is the shadow that accompanies every step. It is the fear of uncertainty, of “La Bestia,” of extortion, of violence, and, above all, of never seeing one’s family again. Fear is the force that tries to paralyze them, the wound that bleeds in my works.

• Courage: But if fear is the shadow, courage is the light that pushes them to keep going. It is the courage to leave everything behind for the dignity of their children; the courage to cross deserts despite thirst; the courage to climb onto the train knowing the risk; the courage to protest; and the courage to dream.

My works explore that exact point where Fear and Courage meet. They do not travel without fear; they travel despite fear. And it is in that inner struggle that the true heroism of migration resides.

Look around me. You see powerful images—I know. But I ask you: what is the price of dignity? Today I am not going to ask you to feel pity; I ask for something deeper. I ask you to feel the weight of a suitcase, to feel the burn of the desert in your throat. Because while we are here, comfortable, at this very moment, someone is walking. And every step they take is a step “Between Courage and Fear.”

Finally, I ask you not to forget these images. May the pain you have felt today become the seed of empathy and action tomorrow.

Viviendo en confianza, dejándome transformar por su Espíritu, y caminando con esperanza en medio de cualquier circunstancia.

Contexto histórico y social

La Iglesia de Roma enfrentaba una profunda división entre cristianos de origen judío y cristianos gentiles. Los judíos cristianos exigían que los gentiles cumplieran leyes rituales como la circuncisión, mientras que los gentiles no entendían por qué debían adoptar costumbres ajenas a su cultura.

Estas diferencias religiosas y culturales alimentaban tensiones, orgullo étnico y resentimiento mutuo. Ante este escenario, el apóstol Pablo insiste en la unidad, recordándoles que la obra de Cristo derriba cualquier muro que los separe.

Ya en ese tiempo se intuía que la unidad, la esperanza y el amor no son simples ideales, sino cimientos para una vida misionera, capaz de llevar aliento, consuelo, confianza, servicio y gozo.

Pablo también nos muestra que la multiculturalidad no es una amenaza: es una riqueza social, cultural y espiritual. No debemos avergonzarnos de la esperanza en la unidad, porque la diversidad no es el problema; lo dañino no es la diferencia, sino la indiferencia. La esperanza en la unidad es, entonces, un galardón que plenifica la vida humana.

La esperanza en la unidad en Cristo es una unidad que actúa:

Una esperanza que fortalece la solidaridad en tiempos de crisis.

Historical and Social Context

The church in Rome faced a deep division between Christians of Jewish origin and Gentile Christians. Jewish Christians demanded that Gentiles comply with ritual laws such as circumcision, while Gentiles did not understand why they should adopt customs foreign to their own culture.

These religious and cultural differences fueled tensions, ethnic pride, and mutual resentment. In this context, the apostle Paul insists on unity, reminding them that the work of Christ breaks down every wall that separates them.

Even at that time, it was understood that unity, hope, and love are not mere ideals, but foundations for a missionary life—one capable of bringing encouragement, comfort, trust, service, and joy.

Paul also shows us that multiculturalism is not a threat; it is a social, cultural, and spiritual richness. We should not be ashamed of the hope found in unity, because diversity is not the problem; what is harmful is not difference, but indifference. Hope in unity, then, is a reward that brings fullness to human life.

Hope in unity in Christ is a unity that acts:

A hope that promotes well-being and peace.

A hope that seeks equity and justice.

A hope that defends humanity and cares for creation.

A hope that strengthens solidarity in times of crisis.

A hope and unity that celebrate the “already” of redemption and confidently await the “not yet” of the coming glory.

So, my soul, why are you distressed?

Do you not know where your gaze is fixed?

Have you forgotten that the love of God is your driving force?

Oh my soul, rejoice, trust, and move forward. Remember:

“And hope does not put us to shame, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)

He walks with the mothers who do not know if their child is still alive.

He walks with the volunteer who opens a door each night, knowing they cannot change the world but can still offer a cup of water.

He walks with those who are rejected for speaking differently or for the color of their skin.

And yet the world, our world has become cruelly blind.

Borders filled with soldiers instead of hands.

To walk in hope today is not a pretty slogan; It is an act of resistance.

MATEO 2:1-10. Una estrella en mi

Esta historia habla de encuentros y desencuentros, de fe, esperanza, gozo y malas interpretaciones.

Los sabios de Oriente son uno de los personajes favoritos de la Navidad en las celebraciones mexicanas, especialmente para los niños. Los llamamos “Los Tres Reyes Magos”. Los niños hacen cartas para pedir regalos que llegan en enero.

Pero este relato bíblico de antaño tiene mucho que decirnos hoy: Para empezar no sabemos si “Los Reyes Magos” son tres o más. Además, no son reyes ni magos. ¡Pero no son delincuentes! Son personas que han hecho un largo viaje enfrentando verdaderas dificultades, peligros, cansancio y no sé cuántas cosas más. ¡Todo por cumplir con el sueño de su vida!

Parece que habían pasado tiempo estudiando a los profetas y sabían cada detalle del nacimiento del Mesías. Esperando el momento justo para encontrarse con él. No sé si tenían la mejor estrategia, pero hay algo muy claro, tuvieron fe. Tanto que Dios los sostuvo durante su travesía. Dios es grande y fiel con los que le buscan.

MATTHEW 2:1–10. A Star Within Me

This story speaks of encounters and misunderstandings, of faith, hope, joy, and misinterpretations.

The wise men from the East are among the favorite Christmas characters in Mexican celebrations, especially for children. We call them “The Three Wise Kings.” Children write letters to ask for gifts that arrive in January.

But this ancient biblical story has much to tell us today: To begin with, we don’t know whether the “Wise Kings” were three or more. Moreover, they were neither kings nor magicians. But they were not criminals either! They were people who had made a long journey, facing real difficulties, dangers, exhaustion, and who knows how many other challenges — all to fulfill the dream of their lives!

It seems they had spent time studying the prophets and knew every detail about the birth of the Messiah, waiting for just the right moment to meet him. I don’t know if they had the best strategy, but one thing is clear: they had faith — so much so that God sustained them throughout their journey. God is great and faithful to those who seek Him.

The second detail to highlight is the star — also the subject of speculation, research, and debate. Science has tried to explain the supernatural without much success. The star, the symbol that reminds us of the supernatural presence of God guiding our steps and leading us to Christ, the Morning Star who has gathered us in this place.

The star connects heaven with earth, our weakness with the greatness of God’s love. It is a reminder of our inner light: “We are the light of the world,” but above all that Jesus Christ, the little King, is the morning star.

Bethlehem, our meeting place, the point of arrival, the gathering place between the East and every corner of the world.

Here we are, divided by a wall in our meeting place, seeking meaning in our actions, proclaiming hope, and strengthening faith. We are all pilgrims in a hostile world, and because of this we must remember to find the star and allow it to guide us to our Bethlehem — the one we have built together by imitating Jesus.

We have built shared dreams and turned our differences into a great strength, where the star, the light of hope and faith, guides us with every step. We share the dream of being together and taking the hands of our brothers and sisters as what we truly are: one great family that continues to impact our communities.

The wise men from the East and we ourselves are simply people who long for a better world — who strive for our inner light to shine and illuminate others. She was only nine years old when, one afternoon, Anyra walked out of the Nueva Esperanza Community Center.

The neighborhood was changing. Drug sales were happening out in the open, and although adults talked about what to do, the problems kept growing. The safe place Anyra loved so much was being threatened. She often saw young men selling drugs on the corner — her corner — part of her home.

That day, something changed in her.

Anyra had been connected to the Community Center even before she was born. Her mother, Monchis, took baking classes there while pregnant and later became the Center’s administrator.

As a little girl, Anyra attended Saturday Bible School and spent hours with Sister Rosario (my mom) — first listening to stories, later helping prepare materials and clean tables. Under Sister Rosario’s care, she felt loved and safe; the Community Center was her second home.

But that afternoon, she couldn’t stay silent.

With courage far beyond her years, she walked up to the group of men on her corner and said firmly:

“We don’t want you here. You’re hurting us. This is a place where we help people move forward, and you’re harming us. We don’t want you here! Please leave!”

Then she came back inside, looked at us calmly, and said:

“It wasn’t hard.”

A nine-year-old girl showed us what love and courage truly look like. She defended the place that gave her security, identity, and belonging.

From her brave act, the Children’s Enrichment Ministry was born — a space where children feel safe, loved, and respected. A place where they receive tutoring, help with homework, lessons in values, and a daily meal.

But the ministry is not only about academics. Many of these children come from homes marked by pain, neglect, or poverty. Love and care are not easy for them to accept. Sometimes they push back. Sometimes it’s hard for our team, too.

But we keep showing up — because God’s love is patient and transforming.

Our Pastor for Children and Families, Lorena, once shared the story of a boy named Marco.

Marco was tough — disrespectful, angry, and hard to handle. Lorena often wondered, “Is it really worth spending so much time on a child like this?”

Marco and his siblings live with their grandmother. She brings them to the Children’s Enrichment Ministry. She makes sure they attend the Community Center — not only to receive support, but also so they can have something to eat.

One day, the pastor went to visit their home and found out that Marco had spent most of the morning in the bathroom, vomiting and even fainting.

Immediately, she stepped in to help: she took the family to the general hospital and then to a lab for tests. She spent the afternoon and part of the night with them, and later called me to come and accompany her.

Before returning to the lab with the boy’s grandmother, she bought some food for both of them. Finally, Marco was seen by the doctors — he had appendicitis.

As they were heading back to the hospital, the pastor offered dinner to the grandmother. Then Marco, with tears in his eyes, looked at her and said:

“Pastor, why are you so kind to me? I yell at you, I’m rude to you, I insult you… and yet you still help us. I’m a bad kid.”

Hearing those words, my heart stopped. Something was changing on that trip to the hospital.

With great tenderness, she looked at him and said:

“You’re not bad. You just need to change your attitude. What you’re seeing isn’t just my love — it’s God’s love for your life. Let’s trust Him, and everything will be okay.”

After his surgery, Marco returned to the program with a new spirit. He began listening, paying attention, doing his homework, and speaking kindly — but more than that, he realized that the Children’s Enrichment Ministry was his safe place. He was loved. He was respected.

Today, the Children’s Enrichment Ministry continues to grow. What began in a single space at the Nueva Esperanza Community Center in Agua Prieta now reaches four different locations, working alongside Frontera de Cristo’s partners and communities — with plans to open a new site in 2026.

Isn’t that wonderful?

That dream is still alive — growing within the community, transforming lives, and keeping hope alight.

For me, this is why we keep going.

Because one small act of courage — the voice of a 9-year-old girl — reminded us that God can use anyone, of any age, to bring light into the darkness.

At Frontera de Cristo, Anyra’s story continues to shine — a spark of hope that keeps transforming lives, one childhood at a time.

Una niña de nueve años nos mostró lo que son el amor y la valentía. Defendió el lugar que le daba seguridad, identidad y pertenencia.

De su valiente acto nació el Ministerio de Enriquecimiento Infantil: un espacio donde los niños pueden sentirse seguros, amados y respetados; un lugar donde reciben apoyo en sus estudios, ayuda con las tareas, valores que fortalecen su crecimiento y un alimento diario.

Pero el ministerio no se trata solo de lo académico. Muchos de estos niños provienen de hogares marcados por el dolor, el abandono o la pobreza. No les resulta fácil aceptar el amor y el cuidado. A veces se resisten, y también para nuestro equipo puede ser difícil.

Pero seguimos ahí, porque el amor de Dios es paciente y transformador.

Nuestra pastora de Niños y Familias, Lorena, compartió la historia de un niño llamado Marco.

Marco era difícil — grosero, enojado y rebelde. Lorena se preguntaba muchas veces: “¿Vale la pena invertir tanto tiempo en un niño así?”

Marco y sus hermanos no viven con sus padres, sino con su abuela. Ella procura que asistan al Centro Comunitario para recibir apoyo, pero también para que puedan comer.

Un día, la pastora fue a visitarles a su hogar y se enteró de que Marco había pasado gran parte de la mañana en el baño, vomitando y hasta desmayándose.

De inmediato, brindó apoyo a la familia: los llevó al hospital general y luego al laboratorio para realizar análisis. Pasó la tarde y parte de la noche acompañándolos, y más tarde me llamó para que la acompañara también.

Antes de regresar al laboratorio con la abuela del niño, compró algo de comida para ambas. Finalmente, Marco fue atendido: tenía apendicitis.

Cuando íbamos nuevamente al hospital, la pastora ofreció la cena a la abuela, y entonces Marco, con lágrimas en los ojos, le dijo:

—Pastora, ¿por qué es tan buena conmigo? Yo soy muy grosero con usted, le grito, la insulto… sin embargo, usted nos está ayudando. Yo soy muy malo.

—No eres malo, solo necesitas cambiar de actitud. Este no es solo mi amor; es el amor de Dios para tu vida. Confiemos en Él, y todo saldrá bien.

Después de su cirugía, Marco regresó al programa siendo otro niño. Empezó a escuchar, a poner atención, a hacer sus tareas, pero sobre todo entendió que el Ministerio de Enriquecimiento Infantil era su lugar seguro. Era amado. Era respetado.

Hoy, este ministerio lleva 10 años creciendo.

Lo que comenzó en un solo Centro Comunitario en Agua Prieta ahora alcanza cuatro lugares diferentes, y en 2026 abriremos un nuevo espacio.

¿No es maravilloso?

Ese sueño sigue vivo: crecer en comunidad, transformar vidas y encender esperanza.

Para mí, esta es la razón por la que seguimos adelante.

“Is he illegal?” asked the 911 dispatcher.

“No, he is a human being created in the image of God, beloved by God. Send an ambulance now!” should have been my response. But that is not what I said.

While Adrian Gonzalez and I were serving our 8 p.m. to midnight volunteer shift at the Migrant Resource Center in Agua Prieta, Sonora, a man entered the center and was obviously concerned. He reported that his nephew had called him to say that there was a young man who had been bitten by a rattlesnake and needed help.

“He is 200 meters south of mile marker 384 on Highway 80,” he told us to go with urgency. Being right on the border, my cell phone had a U.S. signal, and I called 911 to report what seemed to be a potentially life-threatening situation.

I was shocked by the dispatcher’s question, and I am haunted by my too timid response that did not confront the dehumanization of not only the person in distress but many of God’s children who are fleeing extreme violence and poverty, seeking to be reunited with family or simply seeking better opportunities. Not only did my response not confront the premise that some human beings’ lives are more valued than others, but it also perpetuated it.

“I am not sure if he is in the country with authorization, but I imagine not,” I respond. The call is cut.

I am stunned and confused and look at my phone, wondering if the signal was cut or if the dispatcher had hung up. I call back. “I just called, and the call was cut. Do you need any other information from me?”

“Do you have any [information]?”

“Just what I told you before. I am serving as a volunteer at the Migrant Resource Center in Agua Prieta, and a man entered to report that his nephew called him and asked for help because a man with him was bitten by a rattlesnake. He is 200 meters south of the mile marker 384 on Highway 80”.

“Okay.”

End of call.

I sense that the dispatcher is not going to do anything, so I call the Douglas Border Patrol Station, which is responsible for patrolling the section of the borderlands where the young man is, and I tell about the young man in distress.

“Yes. Douglas Dispatch called us and reported it. I told them that they would have to respond because we do not have the personnel to respond.”

I immediately call 911 back, and the same dispatcher responds. I ask for an update on the action taken.

“Yes. We have already notified the Border Patrol,” is the response.

“I know that you called Border Patrol. I just talked to them, and they advised me that they let you know that you would need to send EMS because they do not have the personnel to respond.”

After hanging up, I was still not sure that anyone would respond. Feeling angry and frustrated at my government officials who were supposedly working on my behalf, I wrote a brief email to the Douglas Chief of Police and Border Patrol leadership team, and then I left the Migrant Resource Center, crossed the border, and drove the 16 miles east to Douglas to mile marker 384, not sure what I would do when I got there.

When I arrived about an hour and a half after the initial 911 call, there were two sets of emergency vehicle lights south of the highway.

The next morning, I got a message from the Deputy Patrol Agent in charge of the Douglas Border Patrol station asking me to call him. He let me know that both the Border Patrol and the EMS had responded, and the young man was found and transported to the hospital.

“Unfortunately,” he said, “the young man died at the hospital.”

Later we discovered the young man was really a teenager—just 16 years old— and his name was Juan Diego Trejo Alonso.

While he may have broken U.S. law having entered the United States without authorization, Juan Diego was not illegal, but rather a precious life who God had knitted in the womb of his mother. If we had treated him as God created him, we would not have asked if he were illegal, and he might be alive today.

In the last 14 months, the Migrant Resource Center has welcomed over 40,000 men, women and children who were expelled from the U.S.—persons from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Volunteer Maribel Lara reminds us to always look for the face of Jesus in each of our siblings who enter. Everyone is to be treated as “beloved,” and no one is to be seen or treated as “illegal.”

We are grateful to be a part of a binational community of faith that seeks to define the border as a place of encounter, opportunity and hope, even as there are powerful forces that continue to define it as a place of division, fear and death. We are grateful for your prayers and support that help make our life and ministry here possible.

En los últimos 14 meses, el Centro de Recursos para Migrantes ha recibido a más de 40,000 hombres, mujeres y niños expulsados de Estados Unidos—personas de México, Guatemala, El Salvador y Honduras. La voluntaria Maribel Lara nos recuerda que siempre debemos buscar el rostro de Jesús en cada uno de nuestros hermanos y hermanas que llegan. En Mayo del presente año, la Iglesia Presbiteriana Lirio de los Valles, ubicada en Agua Prieta, Sonora, celebró con gran júbilo su 40 aniversario. Fue un día lleno de gratitud, alegría y profundo sentido espiritual, en el que la comunidad se reunió para dar gracias a Dios por cuatro décadas de servicio, fe y unión.

Entre los momentos más emotivos del culto de acción de gracias, destacó la participación de José Javier Ciénega, un joven de 14 años miembro activo la iglesia. Como muestra de su amor por la congregación y su agradecimiento por formar parte de esta comunidad de fé, José Javier escribió un poema titulado “Amor Eterno”, el cual fue declamado con entusiasmo y reverencia por el grupo de jóvenes durante la celebración.

Este gesto simbólico representa no solo la creatividad y compromiso de nuestros jóvenes, sino también la esperanza viva que sostiene el futuro de su congregación.

Damos gracias a Dios por guiar a cada miembro de esta comunidad en su caminar diario. In May 2025, Lirio de los Valles Presbyterian Church, located in Agua Prieta, Sonora, joyfully celebrated its 40th anniversary. It was a day filled with gratitude, joy, and deep spiritual meaning, as the congregation gathered to thank God for four decades of service, faith, and unity.

One of the most heartfelt moments of the thanksgiving service was the participation of José Javier Ciénega, a 14-year-old active member of this church. As a sign of his love for the congregation and his gratitude for being part of this faith community, José Javier wrote a poem titled “Eternal Love”, which was enthusiastically and reverently recited by the church’s youth group during the celebration.

This symbolic gesture represents not only the creativity and commitment of the youth, but also the living hope that sustains the future of this congregation.

We give thanks to God for guiding each member of this community in their daily walk. We also lift up our prayers for the lives of young people like José Javier, who continue to carry the light of the Gospel with passion and conviction. In a time when it is said that children and teenagers attend church less and less, José Javier is a clear example that faith and commitment to the Word of God do not depend on your age or generation, but on the generosity of your heart.

La libertad, ¿Qué significa para los niños y las niñas? Esta es la iniciativa de desarrollar un Proyecto que inspire e invite a crear libre expresión y felicidad al ser escuchados desde diferentes formas de ver el mundo que compartimos.

Este proyecto inició en el mes de junio con niñas y niños desde los 4 hasta los 17 años. Dando a todos la bienvenida y facilitando herramientas de arte en dibujo, gis y acrílico para no solo obtener la habilidad en el uso de diferentes materiales, sino que además fue hecho con un bello propósito, conocer el corazón de los niños y adolescentes y que sea escuchada su voz a través de lo que les gusta hacer.

A continuación, sus pensamientos y convicciones acerca de la libertad…

Paula de 8 años: Es estar en un lugar en donde no me persigan.

Leonardo de 8 años: Es lo que significa la bandera de México, que es mi país.

Julio de 10 años: Es escuchar la naturaleza y sentir el aire profundamente.

Aily de 6 años: Es pintar con el corazón.

Sayra de 9 años: Es hacer lo que me gusta sin que me lo nieguen.

En este proyecto de arte participaron más de 50 niños, niñas y adolescentes de Agua Prieta, Sonora, ciudad fronteriza. Este fue un tour artístico haciendo recorrido por las diferentes sedes del programa ubicadas en tres colonias de la ciudad. Compartimos momentos juntos no solo en el arte, sino también en el juego y en la comida. De esto se trata ser ministerio que crea y cultiva relaciones cual sea la intencionalidad de cada actividad desarrollada.

Este Tour artístico se hizo extensivo hasta Hastings, Nebraska en relación con la escuela de Verano de la Iglesia Presbiteriana, compartiendo idioma, espacios de música y manualidades, comida típica de esta ciudad y del sabor mexicano. La calidez del Evangelio que nos une.

Este proyecto finalizó en agosto con la participación de los niños, niñas y adolescentes del orfanato CASA-PEPITO en la ciudad de Agua Prieta. Algunos de los niños expresaron así lo que es la libertad…

José: Es como el arcoíris que tiene agua y es real.

Daniel: Es como jugar con Luis, mi mejor amigo aquí.

César: Es elegir a mi familia. Yo elijo estar con mi papá.

Mia: Es compartir momentos que traen felicidad.

Alexandra: Es amor de la maestra Marina porque nos ayuda.

Jake: Es salir con mi familia y escribir cartas porque puedo decir lo que siento.

Eduardo: Es un lugar seguro y donde no hay nada malo.

Vianey: La libertad es Dios, él es mi lugar seguro.

Esta es una evidencia de la creación de obras de arte originales que expresan mensajes de paz y de autonomía en la realización personal basada en la razón y la inocencia de un corazón de niño, quien es el más grande ejemplo de libertad que los adultos deberíamos imitar.

Freedom. What does it mean for children? This is an initiative to develop a project that inspires and invites the children in our ministry to create free expression and happiness by being heard from different perspectives in the world we share.

This project began in June with children ages 4 to 17. Everyone was welcomed and provided with art tools in drawing, chalk, and acrylics, not just so that they could develop skills in the use of different materials, but also with a beautiful purpose: so that we could understand the hearts of children and adolescents and make their voices heard through what they love to do.

Here are some of their thoughts and beliefs about freedom:

Paula, 8: It’s being in a place where I won’t be persecuted.

Leonardo, 8: It’s what the Mexico flag means, which is my country.

Julio, 10: It’s listening to nature and feeling the air deeply.

Aily, 6: It’s painting with my heart.

Sayra, 9: It’s doing what I love without being denied.

Aitana, 8: Being at peace, without shouting

Laura, 11: It is non-violence and non-abuse.

Elías, 12: It’s being unique.

William, 8: It’s playing and hanging out with my family.

Michael, 12: It’s the bridge to peace.

More than 50 children and adolescents from Agua Prieta, Sonora, a border city, participated in this art project. This was an art tour that included a visit to the program’s ministry sites in three neighborhoods of the city. We shared moments together not only through art, but also through games and food. This is our purpose as a ministry: that each activity creates and cultivates relationships, regardless of its purpose.

This artistic tour extended to Hastings, Nebraska, in connection with the Presbyterian Church Summer School, sharing language, music, and crafts, food typical of this city and the Mexican flavor, along with the warmth of the Gospel that unites us.

This project concluded in August with the participation of children and adolescents from the CASA-PEPITO orphanage in the city of Agua Prieta. Some of the children expressed what freedom means in this way…

José: It’s like a rainbow that has water and is real.

Daniel: It’s like playing with Luis, my best friend here.

César: It’s like choosing my family. I choose to be with my dad.

Mia: It’s sharing moments that bring happiness.

Alexandra: It’s the love of Marina, the teacher, because she helps us.

Jake: It’s hanging out with my family and writing letters because I can express what I feel.

Eduardo: It’s a safe place where nothing bad happens.

Vianey: Freedom is God; He is my safe place.

This is evidence of the creation of original works of art that express messages of peace and autonomy in personal fulfillment based on reason and the innocence of a child’s heart, where resides the greatest example of freedom that adults should imitate.

You who walked with your people through the desert, walk today with all migrants who cross borders in search of life, hope, and dignity.

Walk with those who have been stripped of their homes, whether by human hands or the forces of nature. Many find themselves far from home, waiting and hoping for doors to open to a better future.

Protect their steps, comfort their pain, and strengthen their spirit in the midst of fear and uncertainty.

Touch the hearts of those with the power to change unjust laws and systems, and awaken compassion within us, so that we may be bridges of solidarity and not walls of rejection.

Make us, your Church a place of refuge, a community that welcomes, accompanies, and defends. May we never forget that in every migrant, you yourself walk among us.

We reunite to remember their lives, to pray for their families, to pray for our governments to have better policies to prevent the daily deaths of our brothers and sisters, and above all, we gather to commit to fighting for a world with more peace, justice, and love.

Tú que caminaste con tu pueblo por el desierto, acompaña hoy a todos los migrantes que cruzan fronteras en busca de vida, esperanza y dignidad.

Camina con los que han sido despojados de sus hogares, ya sea por el ser humano o cuestiones ambientales, muchos se encuentran lejos de casa, esperando y buscando que las puertas se abran para un futuro mejor.

Cada martes, Frontera de Cristo junto a quienes se sienten animados a acompañarnos, nos reunimos para recordar a quienes han fallecido cruzando el desierto en el Condado de Cochise.

Nos reunimos a recordar sus vidas, a orar por sus familias, a orar para que nuestros gobiernos tengan mejores políticas para evitar las muertes diarias de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, y sobre todo, nos reunimos para comprometernos a luchar por un mundo con más paz, justicia y amor.

On July 4, our country commemorated 249 years since we declared independence from King George, the British Crown, and the country of Great Britain. Throughout our history, we have had competing values, and sometimes the understanding of those values has expanded to be more inclusive and other times to be more exclusive.

Initially “all men are created equal” did not include all human beings but rather excluded all women and all people not considered White. Over the years, people of color and women led a movement that White men of conscience joined, to fight to expand our understanding that “all men” means “all human beings” and to help form a more perfect union. Today, while there are some who still do not believe that all human beings are created equal, I still believe the majority acknowledge it in theory, if not fully in practice, although I believe we have lost some ground.

In terms of immigration, we have celebrated that we are a nation of immigrants (albeit formed on lands inhabited by other people long before we arrived) but, at the same time, we have allowed ourselves to have been guided by xenophobia throughout most of our history. People from around the world have come to the United States fleeing economic and/or political hardship believing that they would find more opportunity and freedom here.

I experienced the beauty of the reality of our nation being a nation of immigrants most viscerally when my brother David was in the hospital for almost three months in 2016/17. Doctors, registered nurses, certified nursing assistants (CNAs), therapists, cleaning staff, nutritionists, and a whole host of folks worked successfully to save his life, to care for him, and to help him recover. Some of them had recently come to the US, while others were the descendants of people who had migrated decades or even centuries before from Asia, Europe, and Latin America, and some whose ancestors were enslaved and forcibly brought to the US from Africa.

While persons who have immigrated to the United States have been integral to making our nation stronger, most successive groups of people migrating to the United States have been rejected culturally, socially, economically, and/or politically: Ben Franklin spoke disparagingly of the Germans; the Chinese had the first exclusionary immigration law named after them in 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act; the Irish need not apply; persons from southern Europe and the rest of the world were excluded by further exclusionary immigration laws in the 1920s; Jewish people seeking refuge from Hitler during World War II were left on boats in New York harbor and denied entry.

In the 1980s, thousands of people were fleeing wars and political oppression in El Salvador and Guatemala, and coming to the US to seek asylum. Almost all of their asylum claims were rejected because our government was supporting the regimes in power, and granting asylum to them would indict us in the political violence, torture, and assassination of community organizers, faith leaders, and labor organizers perpetuated by the El Salvadoran and Guatemalan governments whose armies were often trained by the US.

Yesterday I was invited by Dora Rodriguez to go out into the Sonoran Desert, 3 hours from Tucson and 30 miles from the nearest town with her, her husband, a volunteer with the Tucson Samaritans, and a priest. Dora had fled El Salvador in 1980 at the age of 19 after one of her friends and fellow youth leaders was assassinated by the death squads. On June 30th, 1980, she crossed the border with twenty - five other El Salvadorans near the Sonoita/Lukeville Port of Entry. On July 5th, she was carried out of the desert almost lifeless. Thirteen of the women, men, and youth who had travelled with her had died.

This tragedy helped galvanize the faith community in the Tucson area and birthed the Sanctuary Movement (read recently published Dora Rodriguez: Daughter of Unforgiving Terrain to learn more).

Dora’s story is a reminder that often US policies such as supporting repressive regimes or different trade policies play a role in the root causes of migration. You can read more about this in Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America by Juan Gonzalez.

Living on the US/Mexico border has given me a greater appreciation of the complexity of our nation, of the symbols that represent us and our freedoms, and how we exercise them. On my first July 4 th here in 1999, my dad and my two nephews, Zack (6) and Stephen (4), had come and spent the week with me on the border. On the morning of the 4 th , they played soccer with Gerson, who would later become my brother-in-law, and my roommates Alejandro and Oran, in front of our home in Agua Prieta.

We had been invited to go to Bisbee in the US to celebrate the festivities in the afternoon and evening. When the time came to leave for Bisbee, I told my nephews to come in the house to get changed because we needed to go. Zack asked if Alejandro, Oran, and Gerson were going with us. Alejandro, who spoke great English, answered for me: “No, we are not going with you.”

“Why?”

“Because we are not allowed to go into the United States.”

“Why?”

“Because we don’t have visas.”

“Why?”

“Because they denied us visas to visit the United States when we applied.”

Then my younger nephew, Stephen, joined the conversation.

“Uncle Mark, let’s just go down there and tell them to let our friends in.”

I sadly had to tell him that we could do that, but that the officers who are working on our behalf would not allow our friends in.

With that, Zack said: “Well, if our friends can’t go, then we aren’t going either.”

Zack and Stephen chose to exercise their freedom to celebrate the fourth of July in Mexico with their new friends. We cooked out and watched the fireworks in Douglas fill the sky and dwarf the wall.

I was reminded of this first July 4 th on Friday, when we had three of the Young Adult Volunteers (YAVs) over to our house in Agua Prieta for dinner and a baking class they all wanted to learn to make my Aunt Delores’s cheesecake. Two of the YAVs have not been given permission from the US to cross legally to the north side of the border, even though one has.

As we were putting the cheesecake in the oven, we heard the first booms from the fireworks and walked out into our patio, 13 blocks south of the 18-foot dividing wall, to take part in our nation’s celebration of independence—we could not see the wall, but we could see the fireworks.

On July 4th, I posted a picture on Facebook of the border wall at the US Port of Entry in Douglas juxtaposed with the Statue of Liberty. I have come to think of both the border wall, begun in the Clinton Administration and “strengthened” by each successive administration since, and the Statue of Liberty as important symbols of our nation. One of these symbols is 149 years old and the other made its first appearance around 30 years ago. I also posted the questions: Which one represents more your understanding of the values of our nation? If you are a citizen of the USA, which one makes you prouder to be one? Which one do you think represents the strength of our nation?

While I believe those are important questions to reflect on, for me as a follower of Jesus and a citizen of the US, I think the more important questions are which symbol more closely reflects the values of the kingdom of God that Jesus embodied and how might I work so that my nation’s immigration policy reflects more closely the values of Jesus.

In the Torah, the sacred scriptures that Jesus read throughout his life, there are at least 18 places where it specifically calls on treating the foreigner/stranger/immigrant with love, dignity, respect and as a native. Almost each of these commands is followed by the phrase, “because you, too, were strangers in the land of Egypt.” When I came to the border is when I started to realize that not only did Israel need to be reminded over and over of the importance of these commandments, but we do as well, because we forget as well.

In the New Testament book of Hebrews, we are reminded of the story of Abraham and Sarah and that we are to welcome strangers, because when we do, we may be welcoming angels (messengers of God) without realizing it.

Jesus’ himself reminds us in Matthew 25 that when we welcome the stranger, we welcome him. He eats with, heals, teaches, and feeds Jew and gentile alike. In the gospel of Mark, Jesus throws a picnic for multitudes of people on both Jewish land and in gentile land, and on both occasions the disciples told him to send the people away because there was not enough—sound familiar?

The Statue of Liberty more closely reflects gospel values, yet when I see images of it now I grieve that we as a nation have turned our backs on Lady Liberty and instead of welcoming immigrants, we have gone full throttle in dehumanizing and scapegoating them.

If the border wall is not anti-gospel enough, our current administration is creating new symbols for our nation: erecting Alligator Alcatraz in the middle of a swamp to detain immigrants who were detained by heavily armed, plain clothes, and masked agents without warrants. It is important to note that according to their own records, over 70% have no criminal record; less than 9% have felony criminal backgrounds for murder, rape, aggravated assault, etc; and the rest have only records for immigration- and/or traffic-related offenses.

In the latest tax and spending bill, at the same time we extended the tax cuts primarily benefitting the wealthy and cut billions of dollars in health care and food support for vulnerable communities, we increased the budget by 365% for Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention that will have the potential to lock up over 200,000 persons—almost 50,000 more than the total number of people in our federal prison system as of July 1, 2025 and up from 45,000 capacity now in immigration detention now.

Do not be fooled—they will be locking up mainly people like:

• Miguel, a construction foreman for the company remodeling a partner church in Nebraska, who has no criminal background and who has lived in the US for 30 years, since he was 11;

• or Cristina, a church deacon and a mother who has raised three children—one of whom is a police officer, one a nurse, and the other a university student;

• or Sara who is a CNA caring for the elderly;

• or Isidro who fled Cuba in 1966 and was parolled into the United States, who was detained on June 5th and died in ICE custody on June 26th at the age of 75 (this has been the deadliest year for people in ICE detention ever);

• or Paola, the mother of two and wife of a US Marine, who was arrested while she was still breastfeeding her 3-month-old child and is still detained 4 hours from her family;

• or US citizens and other persons who get “accidentally” picked up in raids.

The increased demonization of people who have migrated to the US, the focus on quotas of arresting 3,000 people a day, the paramilitary type of enforcement actions without due process being respected is creating terror in communities. These policies symbolized by Alligator Alcatraz will increase separating families while enriching private corporations dedicated to building, operating, and/or managing detention centers that have donated large sums of money to politicians advocating these policies. You do not have to go far to find WASTE, FRAUD, and ABUSE.

In the face of the midst of these challenging times in which Lady Liberty is being caged up at Alligator Alcatraz, may we have the courage to CHOOSE WELCOME!

When we have new neighbors in our communities who may speak different languages or worship differently than we do, may we choose to see the image of God in them and to love them as Jesus has commanded!

When we have neighbors who have lived, worked, worshipped, played, and raised families in our midst for years, and are now living in heightened fear that they will be deported to a country that they have not known for decades, may we choose to see the image of God in them and to love them as Jesus has commanded us!

When family or friends use stereotypes to dehumanize our immigrant neighbors, may we choose welcome and ask them to see the image of God in them and to love them as Jesus commanded and to resist using dehumanizing language!

When we have governments trying to instill in us fear of the immigrant, may we choose welcome, and speak truth to power, and let them know that the Statue of Liberty represents gospel values far more than a border wall!

When it seems as if bad news is all around us, may we choose to welcome the challenge to find ways to live out the Good News of God’s love, peace, and justice!

El 4 de julio, nuestro país conmemoró 249 años desde que declaramos nuestra independencia del Rey Jorge, la Corona Británica y el país de Gran Bretaña. A lo largo de nuestra historia, hemos tenido valores contrapuestos; en ocasiones, la comprensión de esos valores se ha expandido para ser más inclusiva, y en otras, para volverse más excluyente.

Recordé ese primer 4 de julio el viernes, cuando invitamos a tres Jóvenes Adultos Voluntarios (YAVs) a nuestra casa en Agua Prieta para cenar y aprender a preparar mi cheesecake de la tía Dolores. Dos de los YAVs no han recibido permiso de EE. UU. para cruzar legalmente al norte, aunque uno sí lo ha conseguido.

Mientras poníamos el cheesecake en el horno, escuchamos los primeros estallidos de los fuegos artificiales y salimos al patio, a 13 cuadras al sur del muro de 18 pies, para unirnos a la celebración de independencia de nuestra nación. No podíamos ver el muro, pero sí los fuegos artificiales.

El 4 de julio publiqué en Facebook una imagen del muro fronterizo en el puerto de entrada de Douglas, junto con la Estatua de la Libertad. En la Torá, las escrituras sagradas que Jesús leyó a lo largo de su vida, hay al menos 18 lugares que exigen tratar al extranjero, forastero o inmigrante con amor, dignidad, respeto y como a un nativo. Casi cada uno de estos mandatos está seguido de la frase “porque ustedes también fueron extranjeros en la tierra de Egipto”. Cuando llegué a la frontera empecé a darme cuenta de que no solo Israel necesitaba ser recordado una y otra vez de la importancia de estos mandatos, sino que nosotros también, porque también olvidamos.

En el libro de Hebreos del Nuevo Testamento se nos recuerda la historia de Abraham y Sara, y que debemos dar la bienvenida a los extraños, porque al hacerlo, podríamos estar acogiendo ángeles (mensajeros de Dios) sin darnos cuenta.

El propio Jesús nos lo recuerda en Mateo 25: cuando damos la bienvenida al extranjero, le damos la bienvenida a él. Él come con, sana, enseña y alimenta tanto a judíos como a gentiles. En el evangelio de Marcos, Jesús organiza un picnic para multitudes tanto en tierra judía como gentil, y en ambas ocasiones los discípulos le dijeron que despidiera a la gente por no tener suficiente comida… ¿suena familiar?

La Estatua de la Libertad refleja más los valores del evangelio, sin embargo, cuando ahora pienso en ella, me duele reconocer que como nación hemos dado la espalda a Lady Liberty y en lugar de recibir a los inmigrantes, los hemos deshumanizado y convertido en chivos expiatorios.

Si el muro fronterizo no es un símbolo anti‑evangélico suficiente, nuestra administración actual está creando nuevos símbolos para nuestra nación: estableciendo el “Alcatraz de los Caimanes” en medio de un pantano para detener inmigrantes capturados por agentes con armas de guerra, vestidos de civil y enmascarados sin orden judicial. Es importante notar que según sus propios registros, más del 70 % no tiene antecedentes penales; menos del 9 % tiene antecedentes de delitos graves (asesinato, violación, agresión grave); y el resto solo tiene antecedentes migratorios y/o de tráfico.

En la última ley de impuestos y gasto, mientras extendíamos rebajas impositivas que benefician principalmente a los adinerados y recortábamos miles de millones en salud y apoyo alimentario para comunidades vulnerables, aumentamos el presupuesto en un 365 % para la detención de personas en ICE (Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas), con lo que se podría encerrar a más de 200 000 personas: casi 50 000 más que la población total penitenciaria federal al 1 de julio de 2025, y mucho más que las 45 000 plazas disponibles actualmente en detención migratoria.

• Paola, madre de dos hijos y esposa de un marine, arrestada aún amamantando a su bebé de 3 meses y retenida a 4 horas de su familia;

• Ciudadanos estadounidenses y otras personas que son detenidos “accidentalmente” durante redadas.

La creciente demonización de los migrantes, el objetivo de arrestar 3 000 personas diarias, las acciones paramilitares sin debido proceso están generando terror en nuestras comunidades. Estas políticas, simbolizadas por el “Alcatraz de los Caimanes”, aumentarán la separación de familias y enriquecerán a corporaciones privadas que construyen, operan y administran los centros de detención, muchas de las cuales han donado grandes sumas a políticos que respaldan estas políticas. No hace falta ir lejos para encontrar DESPERDICIO, FRAUDE y ABUSO.

En medio de estos tiempos difíciles en que Lady Liberty está siendo encarcelada en el “Alcatraz de los Caimanes”, ¡que tengamos el valor de ELEGIR RECIBIR!

Cuando llegan nuevos vecinos a nuestras comunidades que hablan otros idiomas o adoran de otra forma, que tengamos la opción de ver en ellos la imagen de Dios y amarlos como Jesús nos ordenó.

Cuando nuestros vecinos han vivido, trabajado, adorado, jugado y formado familias entre nosotros durante años, y ahora viven con miedo de ser deportados a países que no conocen, elijamos ver en ellos la imagen de Dios y amarlos como Jesús nos mandó.

Cuando familiares o amigos usen estereotipos para deshumanizar a nuestros vecinos inmigrantes, elijamos recibir y pidámosles que vean en ellos la imagen de Dios, los amen como Jesús nos mandó y que resistan el discurso deshumanizador.

Cuando los gobiernos intenten infundir en nosotros el miedo al inmigrante, elijamos recibir, hablemos la verdad al poder y demostremos que la Estatua de la Libertad representa valores del evangelio mucho más que un muro fronterizo.

Cuando parezca que solo hay malas noticias, ¡Aceptemos el reto de encontrar formas de vivir las Buenas Nuevas del amor, la paz y la justicia de Dios!
